Re: Is it true?
misha, don't talk to me about taxes because I live in Quebec, Canada, this is about the most taxed place on earth, but as I have always said, I am not really complaining, I am always saying, I'll pay even 80% taxes if they give me a job like a judge or something (20 000$ a year doing nothing).

I think that's pretty much true anywhere. They're certainly not the most reliable or inexpensive cars, but they last forever. My family owned a 1985 Saab 900 for...wow, 23-24 years? It had its little problems every now and then, but never anything major that my dad couldn't tackle himself. I grew up with this car and eventually it was handed down to me and it finally croaked 2 years later when the oil pump died. We probably had over 300,000 miles on that thing - the odometer had long since stopped working at 255,000, but everything was still original. My mom also owns a 1974 BMW 2002 (she has had it since she turned 16!) and still drives it back and forth to work every other week, also the original engine and transmission - you just can't beat the reliability of those old things.,people who buy Volvo's & Saab, buy them because they love them and know how reliable they are with a minimum and regular maintenance.
Our next-door neighbors were looking to buy new cars while I was growing up, and asked my dad what he would buy. He pointed at his Saab and simply said "that. or a Volvo." A week later, they had bought one of each, a 940 Turbo and a 900 Turbo. Last I heard from them, he still had the Saab, and his wife had a new XC70.
I plan to keep my S70 around for another 3-4 years until I can actually afford to buy a new car, and even then it's going to stay around as a second car until I drive the wheels clean off of it. I love it way too much to let it go.

I have been owning 850T5 since 2003 and i am very much happy with it. This is a great car, a solid combination of power, space and practicality...(and chick puller sometimes).
People asked me what if, i won a lottery for some hundred grands..what would i do, what car would i buy?
I just say, if it is half million, then i will buy Volvo FM12 (the 12L truck!). But if it is less, i will dump that money to Volvo Sweden and ask them to rebuild my car. Just wont buy any other car!

That's funny XB Corp because my friends have asked me the same thing and every time I always answer the same: some of it would go for new parts for my 850 and the rest would go towards an s60R with some modifications from Evolution. Nothing will replace my 850.xb corp wrote:I have been owning 850T5 since 2003 and i am very much happy with it. I had a 1984 760 GLE with the peugeot designed V-6; had a lot of miles on it an was noisy as an old washing machine ( poor lubrication for the lifters) I drove it until the main fuel pump quit for the 3rd time. The starter relay had gone bonkers, so I ran a direct circuit to the starter with a push button to crank it up. I was never sure if the in tank fuel pump worked.
I do wish Volvo sold a diesel here in the USA with a manual Transmission, I'd love to have one.

since marginal mentioned about civic...
recently down here in Malaysia we had very ugly and heated argument in the VOCM forum (Volvo Owners Club of Malaysia) between a crowd of VOCM vs "mr liaw" (potential owner of the new FD2 civic)....he wanted opinions on which is better between the new civic and used S60.
but all of his good comments leaned toward civic..the car that he wanted to buy right from the beginning..
anyway..850 is still great and lovely!

Cough Cough* Man that civic looks horrid. Sorry to say it. I could never see myself driving that particular model.
Anyways thats quite alright because as I was driving down the turnpike and I4 *HATE THAT ROAD* yesterday, I noticed alot of cars broke down on the side of the road. most being Honda's and a few others.
That is when it hit me...
I dont think I will ever own another car that is not a volvo. In particular, the 850s. I believe after my current baby dies *hopefully around 400k miles* I will be picking up another 850... perhaps a turbo this time...

Hey now...don't hate on Hondas. I hate a riced-out Civic as much as anyone, but the rest of them are great cars. Between an Acura and 2 Accords, they have been the most reliable cars I/my family have ever owned. Then my Buick, had it not been tragically killed by an 18-wheeler would have gone on for many years, followed by the Volvo, the Saab, a Jeep and then both Fords (both trucks -something they should be able to make well!), and a Chrysler minivan are at the bottom in terms of reliability.
If there's one thing Honda knows how to do, it's make a great engine. Even as much as the small things broke on my 20-year old one, it never once left me stranded somewhere, even on my trip to Colorado or Florida. I don't like at all what they've done with the designs though...most new cars are actually pretty ugly in comparison to late-90's cars.
I've had my Volvo about 2 1/2 years, and it's scared me more than any of the others on long drives with the check engine light turning on whenever it feels like it, and left me stranded once when the MAF sensor went in the middle of the highway and wouldn't start again. Other than that, I love it dearly though. And it's just a blast to drive

I definitely agree with that, however I have never had reliability problems with my Volvo. The other day I went camping with some friends. The next morning we were all getting into our cars when my friend realized the battery in his new SAAB 93 was dead; he hadn't even used the car during the night...it just died from the cold. I started my Volvo right up with it's 3+ year old OEM Volvo battery. My other friend one time sat down on the hood of his Ford for a few minutes, then went to start his car. Turns out when he sat on the hood it broke a vacuum hose off causing his car to die unless he kept his foot on the gas. Another friend with an Acura couldn't start his car during the summer unless we first performed a rain dance around the car to please the Honda gods. Once we did that it would work sometimes. I have no faith in cars that were not made in Europe, and I don't believe anything out there is more reliable than my 850. But these are just my experiences, I understand that others have had problems with their Volvo's, but for one reason or another, mine has never let me down.jablackburn wrote:I don't like at all what they've done with the designs though...most new cars are actually pretty ugly in comparison to late-90's cars.
I would also like to add that I have spun out into cornfields, jumped railroad tracks, gone off roading, and slid into stuff on ice and snow with my 850 and it has still never given up on me. lol, FYI none of that was done on purpose.
