2001 V70 2.4T Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Cleaning...

Was going to put my 2000 XC in the shop to figure out the problem with it dying. After reading this wonderful write up on cleaning the MAF sensor, I decided to try that first. I like the suggestion about using vice grips to undo the torx bolts, it works! So sprayed the sensor and reassembled, ate dinner and tried it about an hour later. It ran like crap. I thought that I failed and that I either needed a new MAF or something else. Then I remember the test for the MAF that I read somewhere else on this forum and tried unplugging the lead to the MAF and the engine ran smooth. So I quit for the day and thought I'll buy a new MAF tomorrow. Went to work and remembered how I read that someone said their car ran poorly after cleaning and they attributed it to the sensor not being totally dry from the cleaner. So after 24 hours, I tried the car again. It ran smooth, no dying, no surging. Eureka. The people on this forum have saved me so much money. Thanks to all for your helpful posts and thanks Matthew for maintaining this site and forum. Now I have to figure out if I want to tackle changing out my head gasket. I read someone elses tutorial on that. Much more involved!

Where is the second oxygen sensor located? I need to have the mass air flow sensor replaced in my car and was quoted $300.00 + for a 2002 V70 AWD. I was wondering if that is teh average cost to have it replaced or not. I had looked up the part online and found it for about $50.00 which makes the cost mostly labor. If you have any information on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Vida shows 02 sensor before and aft of cat. I suggest you get the nifty wrench, it was need for my Vw as they can be imposible to get off.

I just found the TORX BIT to remove my BOSH MAF sensor for my 1998 VOLVO S70. Here is the web address to order it:

Thanks so much for your time and effort. I've been wondering if my MAF should be cleaned and now I can probably do it myself. Thanks especially for someones comment about not touching the sensor with anything. I am just the type that would take a Qtip to it and break it. I wonder how much a new MAF would cost.

Very nice write up. I have a question on the air intake part that connects to the bottom left (facing the rear of the car) of the air cleaner box (pictured in the 8th photo). This part is missing in my 2001 xc70 (can't figure out how that happened). I've noticed a bit of a howling sound when I accelerate modestly from 10 - 20mph. my questions:

1. do you think this missing part is related to the sound?
2. how urgent is it to replace the part?
3. what is this part called (the poster refers to it as the air scoop)?

I noticed mine was missing as well because of this page. How strange. I noticed this about a week after I purchased the '01 xc70 ( a month ago now) so I called the dealer and they said I could swing by and they'd put it in for me. I told them I thought I was purchasing the whole car, haha. You might want to do that if it was recently purchased or in for service and you think they just forgot.

I've seen that piece referred to as the cool-air inlet. It could have another name though. It basically draws cooler air into the filter box, as well as probably cleaner air. There are no sensors or anything so it probably isn't too vital or causing any issues.
