i own a 2005 volvo s40 2.4i, the service engine soon message comes across, i try holding the odometer pin down but all that does is come up with three numbers that read across 035, the service engine soon message comes back across as soon as the car is started. Anyone have this happen as well?

Thanks for the info. I've been wordering if I could turn it off myself. But I have to ask, what if the service engine light is on because the engine needs service?

I would be very surprised if the service interval light is anything other than a light that goes on after so many miles to remind you that the next service milestone is approaching and the owners manual should be consulted for the iems to be serviced. Now, the check engine light is a different matter. That will light when some abnormality is detected and a remedy is required and it should not be ignored.
Les is more.

Reset mine just yesterday actually.
Press the odo button in before, not after switching on the ignition to position II. (All the dash warning lights come on as is normal.)
Release the odo button only after you see the service light begin to flash intermittently. 2-3 flash's.
Then fully switch off the ignition.
Now start the engine normally and if it is has reset, the service light should disappear after a couple of seconds.
If it stays on, repeat procedure above until you succeed.
I think the issue is, if one allows insufficient flashes or too many flashes of the service warning light to occur prior to releasing the pressure on the odo button it stubbonly refuses to reset.

Re: Comment above by 2002S4019T.
The service warning light and the 'check engine' warning light are each different.
The latter is telling you there is a problem with the engine that needs urgent attention.
(i.e. dangerously low oil level or overheating etc.)
The service light relates to mileage (distances) completed since the last scheduled maintenance service and is meant as a reminder to you it is time to carry out further maintenance when practicable.

Can anyone tell me if the service light is reset, at what point does it come back on? Would it be in xxxxkm's or miles from when the light is reset or is it silly every xxxxkm's from 0? is, my landcruiser timing belt light come on every 100,000kms regardless of when the light was reset( so it lights up at 100, 200, 300, 400k etc.. )

To my knowledge and from reading other numerous other forum inputs, it is a 5,000 miles advance of the odometer or 8,000 kilometres.
My own V40 had advanced 8,000km's from the first time I had reset it which seems to bear out the above.
