A rag and some engine degreaser. I think I'm going to give it another go and let it set up a bit longer before squishing the screw down more. As much sitting in traffic as I did today, the smell was really getting on my nerves.

If that doesn't work, guess its going back to the people that "fixed" it when I'm home for Christmas so they can reapply the freaking valve cover gasket...and do it right.

Engine degreaser has a lube in it. You need acetone or carb or brake cleaner to clean out the hole. then blow it out with compressed air (or let it dry using paper towel to soak up any leftover cleaner

If its clean and dry and you coat the shaft and the washer the oil will not pass by it. The ultra grey may have a touch of acetone in it but not enough to clean out that type of leak.

Any chance you could give it to me for a week or so? I know you have been wanting my triple turbocharger 40mpg /400hp kit.

Or at least I could fix the head and whatever else you wanted. Has to be soon though - I reopen on Jan 3

Yeah I agree; that won't get it clean enough for the RTV to set up correctly. JDS's suggestions are spot on I think.

Gotta get it super clean, totally oil free and very, very dry for the silicone (or most any other sealer in fact) to stand a chance!

I've got some brake cleaner downstairs; I'll definitely give that a shot and see what happens.

JD - as much as I'd love to bring it to you and just fix everything wrong with it, I don't have the $ for all the parts to throw at it so i feel it would be a bit of a waste. Though this summer...I've always wanted to see Nashville and my AC probably isn't going to hold next summer. So if youre up for a day of evaporator/suspension replacement I'll be glad to make the drive

Alright, cleaned it and let it set for an hour before fully tightening down. I'm going to let it set up overnight and not drive it and then see if it's still leaking tomorrow. If so, I'll try your washer trick under the bolt.

I just don't understand why that one is leaking yet none of the others have a sealant on the bolts and dont. Did they just miss part of the valve cover gasket application in that area?

It only takes 1 hours for ultra grey to set up so you can leave it for 2 hours and then drive it with no worries

Nope. It even looks like that stuff made a nice seal around the top. Washer it is...tomorrow.

Grrrrrr. Every time I hit 3500 rpm I smell it.

One other idea...can you get a crush washer that small at Lowes?

doesn't need to be a crush washer. Just a stainless one.
Clean up the surface of the cam cover with some 400 sandpaper or red scotchbrite ($1.57 per sheet at oriely's).
Use acetone/carb cleaner to clean up the area. The ultra grey on the bolt and on both sides of the washer and under the bolt head. You can even rub some on the cam cover first before putting the washer down. You want enough tat it will squish out a little both under and over the washer. Don't forget to wipe the bolt down with acetone also.

I'm assuming the bolt is taking the torque and its not stripped.
