Transmission service required
Hi guys
Haven't been around for a few months due to other commitments.
(2002 Volvo T20 Aisin Warner 55-50-SN transmission).
Good news;
Well I changed the ATF in January (Gibbons method) and that worked nicely as far as it goes.
February the radiator sprang a big leak. New replacement delivered for only € 160. Can't recommend these guys more;

May got my NCT (MOT) first time, absolutely no problems apparent.
Bad news;
My 'Transmission needs service' and limp transmission mode still occurs. I now have a hand held scanner to reset this for each occasion. Generic fault 'P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit open'.
I apologize for banging on about my reluctant trannie but this same trannie works really well under most circumstances, in fact it's almost unobtrusive. So I'm not of the mindset to scrap what is a fine car for a potentially minor problem. I know from exhaustive reading of these forums that other people have horrible problems of, for example shift flares, bangs and clunks, software issues, slipping, valve body failure, sticky solonoids etc., lucky me, none of these apply to mine I think (yet).
In this regard I may have uncovered my fault, could someone please, please confirm this.
As I set out in the car I can rev merry hell out of the engine with no fault warning intruding upon my serenity. However here's the rub, if I'm in top in other words 'D' rive at about 50 mph and exceed about 2200 rpm (say going up an incline) the trannie will revert to it's bad habits as in the '-' gear indicator, warning triangle on and into limp mode. As I said I can rev the hell out of it all day until I exceed 50 odd mph (which comes up pretty quick). A bit of deduction therefore leads me to think that it may be either the input shaft speed sensor or the output shaft speed sensor. Any thoughts guys, and if I'm right where can I get 'em and are they easy to replace.
Help and advice always appreciated

If it's SLU you need to repair valve body: unmount it from gearbox, open, change failing SLU solenoid at least. But IMO it would be cheaper in long term to overhaul valve body completely, since most of work is to take it out and install back, and likely dirt will kill other solenoids sooner or later.

2,200rpm and going up an incline would seem an unlikely condition for torque converter lock-up.
I would have thought there would need to be less load and throttle angle for this to occur.

Yes, hard to say exactly what happens with transmission at such moments, but this error is likely SLU related.precopster wrote:2,200rpm and going up an incline would seem an unlikely condition for torque converter lock-up.

If ATF was burnt, TCM will engage lockup as often as possible to cool ATF down. That's what Volvo states in transmission brochure for their techs. I don't think Ithought did ATF overheat counter reset when he changed ATF.

It's these times when a Vida/Dice comes in handy and will pay for itself. Take a look on Ali Express for a seller with good feedback.
You really need to reset the fluid counter and do adaptive driving circuit. By the way did you use Mobil 3309? Here in Australia we have a synthetic excellent product made by Nulon which meets JWS3309. My trans is at its best now after dealer quoted $4,500 to repair almost 2 yrs ago. It had undrivable behaviour prior to B4 servo, fluid reset and adaptives.

Thanks precopster and VTI, useful thoughts on my problems. Yes I used a compatible fully synthetic ATF and the 'Gibbons flush method'. As regards highway speed on a level road, when the trannie goes limp at 60 mph I end up pulling 3000 rpm whereas if I'm still in 'D' rive mode it's about 2400 rpm. Does that make sense ? Sure is bad on fuel consumption though.
If I felt that I could rectify the fault with solenoids, I'd buy an eBay Sonnax kit from the states. However with parts price, labour, magnetic filter and new ATF this would run to about € 500. Biggish money if a fix is not obtained.
Here's a link to the 30Forty50 club that might show a handy oil and ATF reset

Thanks Guys
any more thoughts very welcome
