Again my CV joint disconnected itself... I didn't do anything with the control arms or axle (just replaced the tie rods) - I think it is missing an ring or clip to hold it in...
Managed to pull the ring on the shaft again, but I will ask my mechanic next time, maybe they can fix it.
Not sure if it is even safe to drive like that.... are you sure there shouldn't be something to hold it together?

If it's a replacement CV shaft (non genuine) there are afew out there with incorrect total length.
This places strain on the CV at full lock and they can pop out from the transmission side. There is no clip.
Afew years ago I bought a non genuine while I was travelling interstate driver's side (passenger side here in Oz) and it was 25mm short. The garage fitted it because we had no choice.
You can tell it's too short by how stretched the bellows look when the car is resting on the road surface.

I can't stress it enough: be wary of replacement CV shafts. Compare with a known good fit shaft before installing any replacement.
I learned this lesson the hard way like so many of you in this thread.

I have no way of knowing if these are original or not. I didn't notice anything strange with the boots.
This car probably has a replacement transmission, and also lots of other stuff that was fubar'ed. (it has 340000km on the clock)
I think my best bet is to ask my mechanic, I have a place that specailizes in old volvos. Maybe they can come up with some fix or check if it is original. Thanks for the help.

This thread topic is exactly what I thought upon first symptoms. A month ago my 2004 XC70 felt like the R/F CV halfshaft popped out of transfer case then back in. The noise it made was distinctively the splines being stripped down some because there was play, hence the snout of the inner part of drive axle popping out some. Unfortunately the passenger side CV halfshaft doesn't have a circlip because of the carrier bearing being on that side. Fast forward to 5 days ago, I'm driving around a circular complex and I feel/hear what sounds like splines stripping then I loose propulsion. No gears work, she won't lock up in park...so at this point I know it's most likely a bad CV joint or probably shaft popped out or splines are totally stripped down. When I put into Drive I can hear something spinning with a noticeable squeaking sound as it rotates. It was 3:30 AM, I'm working so not much time to investigate, so I have o e of my guys push me into a parking place and put blocks around tires. So later on I go back to investigate the situation and find a bad carrier bearing, after I had left her with blocks to hold her from rolling away I was thinking through all the symptoms. I had decided that a failing carrier bearing made the most sense after thinking everything through. The inner splines were a bit stripped about a half inch inwards but the rest of the way out wasn't. Anyway this was the original CV halfshaft at 240k, I'd say I got my money's worth on this part. I'm not sure if the stripped portion of the inner splines can be seen in these pics. I had to do this swap in a parking lot... last time I used towing services for this vehicle they broke one of my front struts. So I'd rather do it this way to avoid any problems.
