Timing belt tensioner shake

I personally think 1-2 mm movement during operation is probably normal.

The problem is: most of us do NOT look at the tensioner movement BEFORE the timing belt job.
We only look at it AFTER we replace the TB and tensioner just to be sure that it is properly installed.
Maybe out of 100 engines from factory, some tensioners move a bit here and there and is considered normal.
The question is: how much movement is considered normal.

If the P.O. did not have any issues with the engine prior to the TB job, and now he installed a Volvo OEM TB
kit properly, then I think there is nothing to worry about. Time to move on.

Right, i should have look at the old tensioner before.

I went to the dealer this morning and asked about the slight move on the TB tensioner.
The technician told me that a little move on the tensioner is allowed and normal as it compensate the imbalance of other parts. But they do not like to leave it be for too long.

There is mainly two things which possibly cause shake on the TB tensioner to look at on the accessory belt. Check if the alternator pulley do not have play and if the pulley on the accessory belt tensioner do not have play as well. (My alternator is new)
The Tech told me it is better to change during the second timing belt the accessory belt and the tensioner to avoid any problems.
I did not changed the AB during the Timing belt change , but i did had a look at the pulley on the accessory belt tensioner which have a slight play and i could hear a bad bearing.

Ordered the accessory belt tensioner and the V-belt and the problem will be solved, i hope.

I remember a discussion, a member was also using a genuine (Ina) part, it was shaking. Then he replaced with a Gates part, no longer shaking (if my memory is still good 8) )

So may be related with the tensioner brand. I would say, chances are not to be worried, especially since this is a new tensioner. You can do a belt test - push in between the cam pulleys, see if the needle moves to the right and goes back smoothly when the belt is released.

Also notice how is the tensioner installed with the eccentric center piece that can rotate

Indeed, worth testing all pulleys on the acc belt - alternator (clutch type tested with a screw driver), ac compressor, tensioner, roller

I think it is the other way around.
The problem was Gates and INA solved it.
