Pump is not running - dead silent.
Blowing into the sas valve from the hose coming to air pump is not passing through, does it make the sas valve CLOSED and not stuck open, i.e working?

Would a test using mityvac hand vacuum pump connected to sas vac nipple to open the valve and then blow through the same hose confirm sas valve being GOOD?

Darn, pump not working. They are expensive. I know you like to buy new parts but check this thread viewtopic.php?t=75710, I still have pump #3 and would be happy to sell it to you very cheap. I have full confidence this air pump is nearly new and will run for a very long time.

Yes, sounds like the SAS valve is closing properly, that's good news. I like your idea of how to test it, go for it.

Since the SAS valve seems to be working, maybe the air pump simply burned out from use.

Your pump #3 matches the part number. A pm was sent.

The wires and connectors assembly can be separated from the motor with relative ease and moved over.

Believe '99 Jetta's have this too. Not sure which you'll find more of in the junk yard.

VW part number 021 959 253C will work.
VW 021 959 253B and 037 959 253A are similar and would probably work

Thank you Rick for the diligence!

Despite the flooding along Mississippi river, Erik was able to get the SAS package to local postoffice for me (you can tell I am watching 5 O'Clock TV News).

Now that the battery tray and air pump were off, I looked closely for any deteriorating components in carbon filters and fittings. It is all original and in very good condition. It is either 4.3 or 4.4 -- only Misha knows.

While waiting for the package to arrive Monday, a second look at the workings of SAS system check valves is timely. We know sas value is CLOSED -- in working state. Item 19 is a check valve with electrical connection and sensor, item 23 is a check valve with item 26 elbow connecting to the vacuum tree.

How items 19 & 23 work, and ways to check if these are GOOD. Also, which sensor is reporting P0410? Many thanks!

All P80 cars with SAS are Motronic 4.4.

P0410 comes from how the front O2 sensor voltage behaves relative to the timing of the signal to run the air pump, it actually doesn't come from watching the pump per se. So a pump on all the time will not set the code, for example.

#19 is sas system solenoid and it is operated by ecu,the same time it operates air pump...when it's needed.
It's normal state is closed.
You can check it by removing the connector, apply 12v to it and listen if it clicks while you opening and closing the circuit.
If it is clicking...it's ok.
Sometimes it can be full of carbon deposits which comes from exhaust manifold through a bad sas valve....check for it too.

#23 is one way valve and you can check it by blowing through it....air is going only one way.
If you can blow in both directions...it's bad.

Erikv11 allready answered about code and management with M4.4.
