An old friend used to buy clunkers, beat himself bloody fixing them, and clear $300 - if he was lucky. Sometimes he would give up and take them to the crusher just to generate cash flow for gas money and eat the loss. I finally convinced him to buy nicer cars to start, and even if he didn't make a bigger profit, at least they would be easier to peddle, and be less likely to expire in the driveway.

You could get $3000 easily for your R, Neil. Maybe even $3500

Up here a base model sells for that in running condition. Not much more to replace on it. I have the dash repair to do then hopefully it won't find any new ways to break for a while!

The boss likes to drive it, so other than needing to replace the rear mufflers at some point it can spend 6 months a year sleeping.

For a guy who had barely turned a wrench to three major engine and body projects in a couple years…. Incredible.

Hmmm pencil car…

Does it draw a crowd?

Can you park it in sketchy neighborhoods?

Can it use leaded gas?

Is it his #2 car?

Did it look good and sharp on paper?
Funny enough my friend is from Pennsylvania

My wife was driving but it hit 250. Small piece of the cupholder immediately snapped off. The universe is in equilibrium.

Good story. When you invest in repairs, you're buying future miles. My two tips for financial health are (1) earn as much as you can (I have found you can often raise your sslary, if you are employed, much more by switching jobs, rather than through raises. Of course, important promotions can also work) and (2) limit spending on the major things, being housing and cars. I've stopped buying new cars 25 years ago. I've been lucky these past 3 years, making money on a few projects: a 1971 VW 411 I bought for $2,000, fixed up and painted in my garage for a grand total of $1,500 in paint, sheet metal and various parts, and sold it on Bringatrailer for $10,500. And my son's daily driver is a '90 Bronco 2 that I got for $2,200, did maintenance and repairs on for about $2,000 and we've since driven it about 20,000 miles and I reckon I can sell now for about $8,000. It has 245,000 miles on the original engine, I did have to put on two new heads ($550). Just enjoy, keep up the Volvo with what it needs, and apply your skills where useful. (For my newer Volvos, 2002, 2003 and 2008) I do use a good scanner, helps enormously with diagnosing. For example last summer our 2003 S80 T6 started running rough and just like in Abscate's story, a new coil and 30 minutes later we were back in business thanks to the scanner telling me which coil had likely failed.

You can buy the replacement in new , non brittle plastic for $30 from the usual sources. FCP will charge a bit more, but is a smart bet

Part number 9165036

Nothing says “ I love you”. Better than “ I fixed your cup holder” for the 38th anniversary.

Abby got spark plugs for Christmas!

It’s much harder finding “junkers” in my area nowadays. Used to see a lot of those S40s without coolant level sensors but they were plentiful in the junk yards.
EDIT: just bought fixer uppers if I knew I could make 1K or more on it.
