Not sure why the shop they don't like told him 3 cylinders are shot? Maybe the owner misunderstood?
That's where I'm confused as well, but it's not unheard of that a shop gets a car and magically a small issue turns into a massive one. I have a feeling it's something simple from that chain of events, but again, when a shop gets their hands on it anything can happen.

It could be worth $800 with bent valves if it's super clean otherwise. It's as "simple" as a head job. "Simple" is a relative term here, but you get the idea!

Unfortunately, when a seller mentions his newly purchased tires (usually some cheap garbage like Westlakes) he usually stands by the price and uses the tire excuse to justify the outrageous price. People don't seem to realize the sum of parts (the car) is worth less than the parts themselves... that includes tires.
It's really funny when they "threaten" to part it out themselves instead of sell it for cheap to someone who can fix it. Usually it's someone who has no idea what he's getting into  . I had a guy do that with a Saab 9-3 I looked at a few weeks ago... tried to tell me the headlights were worth $800 on eBay because they're HIDs. He'll realize once he's got a garage full of parts he can't sell that he should have just sold the car to me for $300! The car was a basket case, needed a head gasket, just about every oil seal, and suspension work.

The guy has the same first name so I guess he wouldn't lie to himself . No, he does not know anything about Volvos except the AWD and Turbo are nice.

The 16 year old drives the car by choice and they paid $8K two years ago and have some records. The tires are Sumitomo's from Discount Tires. As for cleaning it sat under a tree so the engine bay is a little dirty. The interior door panel's coverings are coming unglued completely but not falling off. The glue is super sticky.

For someone who has never done it, it's best to be safe and give yourself plenty of time. I've done it several times on several P80s, so I can move quickly.
Ill give you one from the Northeast to beat the clock. You know its bad when the first thing you have to do is chip away the rust, to FIND the bolt you are trying to loosen

I have to say, my path to Nirvana in old age has been making a list of all the hardware on a job, and then ordering it all new. There is nothing quite as satisfying as putting new hardware on a Volvo, except the Indy 500. (Bad NSFW movie reference)

New hardware is always nice. It's so satisfying to have brand new OEM hardware to replace the crusty old stuff.

Next problem... he mentioned what he paid for it two years ago. Sellers need to understand when a car is non-running, that doesn't matter one bit. Next he'll say the window sticker said it was a $35k car, so it's worth at LEAST his asking price  .

Lowball or move on... people are nuts!

You mean like $500 or $750 low ball?

EDIT: The seller was not trying to paint red lipstick on a Moose  . Going over the folder he had on the car I saw the majority of the information and asked him about it. It took several months after the car was parked for them to pay it off before they could sell it so they are just trying to get it out from in front of their neighbors home in the court.

They paid 8k and thrashed 7700 of value out of it in two years, indeed...

:D :D :D

Volvo fit and finish is just so beautiful that you can't look at any Volvo and not think its worth 5k to someone....the problem is finding that someone. My second-part-owner 1998 still cries "Dont kill me" in my garage every night.

The key here is 16 year old! I have a now beat up C70 in the drive. A couple years ago it was almost brand new. So a couple of years with a teenage driver can definitely destroy a car. June

Yikes, you are right! The kid used it for pizza delivery and went from 80K to 140K in a little over 2 years.

The paint is either in great shape or no shape. They all cry "Don't Kill Me" and "Take Me Home" even if it is parked in the driveway for sometime.
