https://gizmodo.com/impossibly-fast-fan ... 1846954061It may seem like an unorthodox approach to speed, but back in 1978, Gordon Murray, the famed car designer responsible for the iconic McLaren F1, helped create the Brabham BT46 “fan car” which did the exact same thing, winning the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix before being withdrawn from the competition.

Oh Hai!
The Fan Car! (And it was an Alfa Romeo! 3-liter flat 12)
Gordon Murray is a wizard.
And then a much more crude variation, the Chaparral 2J "sucker car" in Can Am.
It had a ZL1 427 and then a 45 hp snowmobile engine at the back running two big fans. It had lexan chassis skirts that moved with the suspension and could go around corners at unnatural speeds. It wasn't very reliable but it was skunking everyone else.
With both of these cars, opposing teams claimed the fans picked up rocks and dirt off the track and sprayed it in their faces and were therefore dangerous. The Brabbam was withdrawn because Bernie Ecclestone convinced Murray it would be bad for the contractors assn to start an arms war of fans and gadgets. The Chaparral was banned because it had "moveable aerodynamic devices."
That concludes today's online remote learning race car history lecture!

Hi Folks,
A new-ish car entered into our family.
We went with a 2016 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. First time owning a hybrid so it will be a whole new learning experience for me.
We had some requirements when looking for a car that ruled out all SUV-ish cars.
We actually test drove a V60 but that got crossed off the list early. I personally could not pay as much money as they go for with the interior that exists in the 2015-2018 V60s.
I just do not like that generation interior. It looks quite dated to me and do not like how they laid out.
I do not find them attractive in any way (mainly dash and center console).
Just my preference no offense to to anyone that has the cars and enjoys them.
We also did not want to pay the amount that the 2019 and newer V60s seem to go for.
the interiors on the 2019 and up V60s are quite nice. Major improvement but another $10-15K over the previous gen.
We also ruled out the 2015-2016 V60 due to potential issues with the rings on those cars.
That left the 2017 and 2018 V60 which I decided I just didn't like. Those seats though.... so comfortable.
In the end, the Avalon fit our needs quite nicely and my wife is fine trying a hybrid (40/38 mpg in theory)

That steering wheel....
Quirky French techno luxury.
The car that saved Charles de Gaulle...
"The most notorious of his assassination attempts was in 1962 when a group of people fired 140 bullets into the president’s car as he was travelling from the Elysée Palace to Orly airport. The group killed two bodyguards and three tyres were popped, but it was the car that saved his life. De Gaulle and his wife ducked and the driver was able to accelerate out of a front-wheel skid thanks to the car’s suspension system. The group had tried to kill him because they thought de Gaulle had betrayed France after he accepted Algerian independence. They were the last ever people to be killed in France by firing squad for their crime. Incidentally, de Gaulle forever loved his Citröen after that."

I’ve been reading about the new Bus for 20 years. It’s always just around the corner. Sometimes it’s electric, sometimes it’s a T4. Sometimes it’s a fan mock-up, sometimes it’s a VW in house render. Sometimes it’s a camper. But never, ever does it appear.
So this not coming here I suppose is poetic irony.
Wasn’t the assassination attempt on De Gaul the basis for the famous book Day of the Jackal? My parents had that, and I tried to read it when I was 11 or so, but after the action at the beginning, it was so boring I almost cried. I should try again maybe

Those DS gauges scream 1950 while the vents scream 2250.
