Switch is either for driving lights or O/drive addition, either way, designed to take your kneecap out in an accident!
Always liked these and nearly bought one 30 years ago but found like all Volvo coupes I can't sit in them due to lack of headroom. Sigh...!

Suggestion made in the comments that the car was born with an automatic, or some such issue, and the switchgear underhung is the O/D control now. Way ugly.
