Today I found that the blower motor being turned on when I got to the car about an hour after parking it is not a sign that the PO has messed up the wiring on the CCM, but rather a handy feature to remove condensation from the AC evaporator and prevent nasty things from festering inside the car.

I've been doing this manually for years, but happy to know Volvo thought to code it in the car from the factory. This car constantly susprises me with nice little features like this, which I did NOT expect to find in a 23yo car.

Installed a 150 watt oil pan heater and also checked that my block heater is working in preparation for winter. This car lives outside year round and although it will start in -30 with no supplemental heat, it breaks my heart to have to do it.
I bought this heater at Fleet Farm for 35 bucks. It looks like it’s very good quality and made by Nickson Industries.

Searched Nickson Industries and couldn't find it then block heater and eventually heating pad which led to this on Amazon. It's pretty hot, slightly lower than operating temp before cut off.

[Thermal Protection] These 150W/120V oil pan heating pads have a built-in automatic thermal protector that keeps the temperature around 140~158°F/60~70°C. When the temperature reaches 194°F/90°C, this product will automatically power off. When the temperature drops to about 122°F/50°C it will start heating again, effectively preventing safety hazards caused by high temperatures.

How long does it take to heat the average oil pan? Seems like it would stay on all the time as the oil / pan temp would transfer the heat to the rest of the motor. It's like having a 150W bulb on all day long in the thick of winter especially outdoors.

It looks exactly the same, my in-laws use these on the farm in Minnesota and say they're the best for farm equipment and water tanks for watering cattle. The 150 watt size is appropriate for 5-7 quart oilpans. You can buy them at FleetFarm and Tractor Supply, places like that. Should keep the whole block warm as you say, especially with a block heater as well. Im glad mine still works, those are about $230.00 from Volvo.

I did not wait to see if it shut off by itself after a short time. Simply turning on the key stopped the motor. Each time it was a rather hot day. I had been fearing that some electrical gremlin was the cause until I saw this post which seems to describe what I experienced.

CCM afterblow function, starts in 15-50 minutes after engine shutdown, runs for a few minutes, and that keeps evaporator mildew-free. It does not start if the battery charge is low. Also does not start if you turn A/C off a few minutes before arrival and evaporator temperature raises above dew point.

vtl - Thanks for that explanation. Normally I tend to turn off the A/C as I turn into my long driveway which may be why I haven't noticed the afterblow for the ten years I've had the car until recently. I'll try to set up the conditions for afterblow activation during our next warm spell and observe when and for how long the system blows. My major concern is that it activate too long and run down the battery but your description makes me think the CCM takes care of it.

Looks like summer is over and wetter weather ahead sooner than expected, so the winter mats are back in the car until the sun comes out again next year
