Attempting to fix my Volvo myself for the first time. I believe the #4 coil died yesterday. The car had a occasional hiccup which only was noticed idling in gear such as in a drive through the day before yesterday. Then yesterday afternoon across town it stuttered a few times, then a dead misfire. The code says #4 cylinder misfire. A strong fuel smell from tailpipe. I'm about to switch the #4 with #3 to see if the misfire moves. My dealer won't have 6 new coils till morning for me so I have plenty of time.
What concerns me is the driver side turbo tube has a slight oil film! The passenger side is clean. Also some strange crud under plastic cover that is not oil? Is this normal?? See photos. Should I worry about that turbo or crud? The sparkplug well is clean though. Thanks, June

I have never seen the inside of those tubes before so I wasn't sure if that slight oil film coating the inside of the driver side tube was ok. The engine and turbos are factory still with 203K miles 17 years old. June

Does anyone know if I can test the spark with a HEI spark tester? Rather than swapping coils around plugging a HEI spark tester in would be easier. I just don't want to fry a computer or something. June

I didn't want to risk using the HEI spark tester. It was made for 70s GM HEI Ignition systems. My dealership had 4 of the 6 so I replaced 3 through 6. The car runs great again! Tomorrow they will get the other two so I'll install them then. After all these years of owning her I can now say I fixed her all by myself! June

A little bit of oil in the charge air piping is normal. That brown stuff on the cam cover is also pretty normal. I'm not sure if it's old oil residue or maybe some sort of coating on the aluminum that's baked off over time. Nothing to worry about!

During the installation portion, my neighbor's husband came home and by the time I shut the hood three other neighborhood husbands had joined in watching me from two houses down. I felt a little self conscious... I wonder what their betting odds were the car would never start again
Abscate, should I worry the driver side turbo is sick? Or is it normal for one to have some oil coating the tube?? After all the passenger side turbo is clean???? I don't know what is normal for 200K turbo piping to look like inside? I thought it should stay like new in there... June
