Re: Tire recommendation

Post by kgflint t5 »

hi, everyone! great site. i am trying to put the best tires on my 98 t5 and am running into major difficulty.primarily because my gas panel had the OE's listed as 50's. i see now why the OE size was changed and have been racking my brain on that one over the last month or so. my question is, is with 205/55/R16 do the tires rub?

ive been considering the good year triple tread and the bridgestone serenitys. problem is is that i need to make that choice tomorrow!

i like the primacy not the price though. but really like the warranty with the GY TTT and the price. but i also like the bridgestone turanza serenity because it seems more designed for that car.

im afraid of rub! my driving is easy going mostly highway and i live in california.

any help would be much appreciated! thanks in advance. :)

I only get rub at a full wheel turn in the front. The rears have not rubbed to my knowledge.
Hope this helps you in your decision.
I have the General Altimax that was discussed in the beginning of this thread...

Welcome to MVS,

The change from the 50s to the 55s occurred when nearly every Columba wheel came back bent. Volvos have always been notorious for shipping the cars with butter soft alloy on the wheels - one of my 740s took out all four wheels in one shot at a transition from old pavement to new pavement.

I have 55s on my Platinum and there is no rubbing at all but I also have Bilstein TC shocks and struts on it which does seem to slightly raise the car. My '94 N/A has the 16" Columba wheels with the 50s and stock Sachs/Boge shocks and struts.

The difference in the ride is surprising, with the 50s you can feel every pebble on the road but the 55s smooth a lot of that out. The 50s do handle a bit better though and they have a sportier look but I fear every small pothole.

ok gentleman last questions! anyone know how i can identify the load index for my t5? is the information on the door? i cant seem to determine the appropriate load index for my vehicle. anyone have a link that has that information. in all my research of the t5 specs all i get is curb weight.

also what happens when you go with a lower rated tire and a lesser load index? does it run the tire down faster? is it okay to keep the load rating and sacrifice the speed rating from lets say v-h.? i really do appreciate the feedback. basically im struggling with trying to get a 91v rated tire on this car. but i need to know if its even a v rating. ive searched hi and low for that info and cant find it. thanks everyone.,,.,,
