Bad grounds can definitely cause this. Find you take the battery out and inspect the grounds under the battery?

Yes I did take out the battery and the battery tray and cleaned the ground cable there. Hopefully that was the cause for the no start, however, like I mentioned earlier, the prolonged start is still there and you really have to kick down on the gas pedal to get it to start. Maybe the fuel filter? Would this be something related to the check valve in the fuel pump?

I don't know early 90s Volvo to well but I don't think you have a fuel delivery problem. It sounds like you almost have too much fuel and opening the throttle is helping to solve that on starting.
There are quite a few threads about coils giving spark but poor starting performance. Maybe a brand new fresh coil from Bosch would be worth a try?

Yes its somewhat of a mystery. I don't know the history of this car, other than it was swapped from auto to manual. The intake manifold has been swapped as well with one from a non turbo I'm guessing, and also the downpipe. Perhaps a stage 0 is in order.
