2004 XC70 Loose Exhaust cam gear

Yes random misfire on cylinders 5/3, when my father in-law pulled the Exhaust VVT Hub he never marked anything w/white paint, he refused to take suggestions because he thinks he knows better cause he was a mechanic years ago. I've done plenty of 90k service(T-TEN TB service interval) to know if I'm unsure of something I'll stop to research the correct procedure. Nobody ever asked him to work on the car anyway, his opinion was asked and he just started taking shyt apart!! Anyway, he made a big mess for me to clean up. The exhaust camshaft has to be off...I lined up the rear camshaft slots at 3 & 9 o'clock then installed rear cam locking tool so I could put the Exhaust VVT hub back on. Unless he spun the cam 180degrees I'm setting the VVT hub wrong. My father in-law is an ahole and he does fff'd up shyt so we(meaning my wife & I) would put it past him. It's his daughters car but I think he would do it to make me look bad. I proved him wrong twice that day concerning the car and I think he was pissed off enough to do something to throw everything off. I banned him from coming to our house cause I don't want him coming over touching stuff making things even worse. Sorry for long response Regent but thank you so much for work through this with me.

Mighty tough beans that is... I would figure out how to tackle one enemy at a time. It looks like you've got more than one combat going on.

Thanks Regent for the encouraging words, I think setting the VVT hub/sprocket is the issue still.

Thank u for trying but that motor only has single VVT cam, my wifes XC70 has 2 CVVT's (B5254T2), I've done plenty of Tbelts at work and home but different than this. I work at Lexus so everything is Toyota but the VVTI cam sprockets are different but it should be similar enough. I owned a '96 850 which had regular sprockets and my '98 v70xc doesn't have sprockets like this either. I went by the book so I'm missing something.

I just wanted to thank everyone on MVS that contributed to this thread. After the entire struggle I came to realize the timing wasn't after all, we had 3 bad coil packs. It makes no sense but that was the issue, I kept thinking I set the exhaust VVT sprocket improperly. My handheld obd2 scanner gave one DTC for misfire on cylinder 5 then cylinder 2 & eventually a slight miss on cylinder 2. I was at the point where I performed a leak down test and thankfully the results came back good. So at this point I had a feeling it was ignition related even she ran fine before disassembling the timing area. I suspect my father in-law is the culprit to the multiple coil pack failure's but none the less the '04 XC70 is running well with all new factory tbelt, tensioner, idler, WP, Timing cover clips, VVT torx plug, 5 NGK plugs, 5 oem coil packs and fresh Volvo brand coolant. Thank you.
