2007 XC70: think I need a new battery. How do you test/where do you buy replacements?

Right, but that's exactly it. The specs don't align and I have no clue what group or H type I'm looking for. Sites listing sizes doesn't really help me since I don't know what the size codes mean or what my current battery's size code is. How do I know what to get?

If you google the dimensions you'll get the name of the size you have currently.

For larger batteries you already have the names for the sizes that will fit on previous pages. H8 is the largest that will fit.

CCAs, Ah, Reserve capacity don't need to match they just need to be the same or higher.

Why not just buy the Volvo battery? They last a long time, fit in the space properly, also have the correct power and resistance, and the vents fit properly which is a safety thing.

Don't forget the lady here in Florida in the Porsche SUV who died and her child too on the interstate from a aftermarket battery not vented correctly. June

I've tried the obvious stuff like that already, but it's not so easy. Due to the shape of the plastic molding it's not clear to me exactly where to measure from. Looking up battery sizes on various websites, they either don't list anything in that size, or list several sizes that are similar (Ie; 40R, 41, 91, etc). I don't know if I can just pick one of these at random or what.

You mentioned you put a larger battery in your v70 which would "seem to be group size 49 in the US system" 93SCMax mentioned fitting an H6. jimmy57 said all P2s will hold an H8 but the last hole is not drilled, but the last hole in mine is both drilled and threaded unless he's referring to something else.

$200 sounds like a lot but is it really? When my factory battery died I called AAA to tow it to the dealer and instead I was talked into buying a battery from them that supposedly was the same. All seemed fine for a while than strange things started happening. The alarm lights would blink without the siren intermittently, suddenly the check engine light kept coming on with strange codes, I kept getting the service alarm message, while driving the DIM kept saying I had a message illuminating the annoying yellow triangle then just go away. I had just had enough and I took it in insisting they run a complete diagnostic on the computer system. After a hour in my mechanics stall the car wouldn't start. New correct Volvo battery went in and that was two years ago and none of the problems ever have returned. Yes I still could have gotten a free replacement battery from AAA.

Months later the fuse panel and starter cable had to be replaced as a result of the alternator fring the under hood fuse pannel durring the time of the wrong battery. My dealer replaced the wireing harness and the fuse pannel at a cost. The alarm module is to this day original and has never thrown anymore messages or blinking lights.

I had forgot that a non Volvo battery was in there as who even thinks about the battery when the car is starting fine? The AAA battery electrical specifications were not what my 2004 S80 T6 calls for though it looked and fitted right physically. Apparently these cars complicated electrical systems that draw a lot of current and the battery must handle the load for X amount of time, otherwise the alternator takes over too soon and produces too high of amps for too long of a period of time trying to recharge the battery without the proper buffering from the battery to the electrical system. Upsetting the computer system causing all the false codes and alarm crazyness and in my car's case this happened for too long and fried the under hood fuse panel. Just buying the Volvo battery to begin with would have been cheeper and saved a lot of frustration. I am sure i haven't explained it as good as my mechanic explained it to me, but make sure the specifications electrically are to the original Volvo specifications to save yourself a nightmare later. We both have P2 cars so I assume the computer system is at least a close cousin. June. P.s. I'm using lots of bandwidth!LOL
