I have seen this degree of rust before on oil field equipment used in the Gulf of Mexico. The new steel would get painted with total of 25 to 30 mil thickness in three coat system. The primer was zinc rich about 8 mil thick. Automotive paint systems are generally about 2 to 3 mils total. The equipment was used on offshore platforms and washed down with salt water because fresh water had to be hauled out by boat. After just a couple years, all the steel looked like your struts with maybe some colored paint on the top.

I am 100% for stage 0 restorations, and have done so on my 98 V70 NA manual, but the amount of rust here is concerning. I would try to salvage the transmission and other donor parts to put towards your next project. If you do decide to restore this I would love to see the progression and results. Willing to help, Ive encountered/ replaced just about every stinking part on my 98' with 270k miles. Funny enough it drives way better now than it did when I got it at 150k....

It’s not really a restoration, its getting a runner for its last 2-3 years for someone in need.

Badly stalled on the right front steering knuckle. Every bolt is a horrible fight. I have a frozen broken strut stud in the top of the knuckle but of I can get the knuckle to the press that will yield. I would usually go after the control arms but adding more bolts isn’t a good plan right now.

Right now I will run it without power steering but I might try release the hard steering lines in activipation of replacing them. The rack is badly rusted but isn’t leaking, just the hard lines

The right front wheel bearing was the worst I have ever seen. It could only be hands turned 1/2 revolution , it then galled up. The car did roll and drive, but that bearing wasn’t long for this world. Will replace with Clarke’s ( Black 1998 parts car)

Keep plugging at those rusty lumps (AKA bolts). When you finish you may get a whole wall full of Volvo Horns.

Well, j gave in and went after the LCA

For the first time , bolts cracked with the long breaker , then zipped off

I've got the nasty knuckle off the car so I can replace it with used

Rotors off.

Timing gear and water pump off.

Actually got both front calipers to crack and bled some fluid. Look like they are both working ok. Will Turn rotors.
