Glad Im not the only one that dislikes pinstripes. Why do dealerships think pinstripes are a good thing?
One more in that club, pinstripes are awful. Almost as bad as those "gold badge packages" that they used to offer back in the '90s. Someone would electro-plate the badges (not sure the exact process) and the dealer would mark it up as a "special edition".
Or the "SPORTSWAGON" badge that you see occasionally on 850 wagons, especially from the northeast US. The Sportswagon package consisted of ... a badge and some glue.

The hilarious thing is that it's an OE badge, but it's literally just the badge... no extra equipment or features. It looks like it was found by a kid in the ricer aisle at AutoZone!

I've been curious how people feel about the old v40 (also the v50) but also curious what people think a car without an engine is worth? This is a really shiney looking v40 with a snapped tb for 500.

I'm not looking for another project myself, but in general how common is it to buy car for the body to then drop the engine in?

Specific to this car, In my short time on the forums I don't see many people talking about the v40, is there any rarity/desirability to these cars that make a good-condition body like those worth someone's time?

Size is the only complaint. Son and I saw a really nice silver 98~2000 S70 today. We use to own a silver 98 and I said a great 2 seater car. Parents loved the comfort of the rear seats but were old enough (early 2000's) to have a hard time getting in and out. The kids legs in the booster would hit the back of the front seats.

If you have the skills to fix the head gasket and don't have kids I think it would be a great car especially with the rear seats down (I'm assuming they fold forward). Make a nice sleeper also.

2004 had little complaints.

Lots of people don't like the S/V40s, but I've always kind of liked them. It's a unique platform, based on the Mitsubishi Carisma. Still a white block, but the 4 cylinder iteration. The engines have some tuning potential, but performance parts aren't nearly as easy to find as 5 cylinder parts. Lots of suspension parts are interchangeable with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (III or IV?) of the time.

Maintenance wise, I've heard they're not bad. Neglected ones can be picky, but that goes for any Volvo.

My main complaint with them is the lack of a manual transmission in the US. Otherwise, I'd probably buy a V40 as a daily driver!

Nice, a Sport! Priced fairly if it's mechanically excellent. Any leaks, and I'd feel much better around $5k. Still, not a terrible deal for a fairly rare V8 XC90!

Re: V50, I always ask Volvo drivers how they like their Volvo, usually in parking lots if they’re nearby.

I get a lot of positive comments about the 2005+ V50s. People really like them. Naturally, it’s all in the sample you buy.

Member Thin Air bought a bad sample 5 years ago after his S70T5M was totaled. He left Volvo after that.

My mom had a 2000 V40 and liked it somewhat, overall, except for the seats and the dealer experience — Rickenbaugh Volvo in Denver.

The car was delivered new with a dead battery. It was downhill from there.
