Re: Need Help With Drive Cycle(s)
You can force the evap to complete the cycle in VIDA with me7 (1999) but I’m not sure about motronic 4.4 in yourv1998

Hello again,
Oh ok well i dont have VIDA anyway i'd have to look that up to find out what it is i forgot.
But another side thing that isnt that important, when i got the car back the 'service light' was turned off.
This is not the check engine light im sure you know, but the light that is supposed to tell you when to get an oil change.
Now he said it was on when i talked to him on the phone, so they must have had a way to reset it.
Or, do you think it could have been reset when the battery died, because the battery voltage was 0.025 volts (yes that is far far below even 1 volt. And i have never seen a battery go that low just for the heck of it. The only way it could have went that low was for something to be turned on that shouldnt be turned on, so i was wondering if the dome light can be turned on and left on because i remember something about that when i got the jump the next morning, i think the dome light was one but i cant remember if it was because the door was just open and closed or it was always on.
Thanks again,
AL in NJ.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

I don’t think battery disconnect resets the service light but the protocol evolved over the platform ftom 96 97 98 99. One year required a tool, by 99 a series if keystrokes resets it. 1998?
Here the 99 procedure
Ignition off.
Press in trip odometer reset button.
Switch on ignition.
Continue pressing in the reset button for 10 seconds. (Sing one third of the "Final Jeopardy" theme
Release reset button within 4 seconds.

Yeah i went through the service light debacle when i first got the car 6 or 7 years ago. I found that the only thing that would reset it is a special 'tool' made by volvo but there are other manu's that came out with one that would do it too, but they were all a ittle on the expensive side for what it does. If i rem right, around $100 USD.
So i gave up on that and then learned that it makes a nice warm up timer. So i started letting the car warm up for the 2 minutes it takes for the light to go out, as a minimum. I started to like that idea so i never bothered to try to get it reset. I also thought about designing a tool to do it but again didnt feel like doing it just for the sole purpose of turning that light off.
Even two garages i took it too could not turn it off because they didnt have the 'tool'.
So i thought about the battery going completely dead and that might have caused it to reset because why would that light have a non volatile memory when the OBD2's dont. I am not sure but did they even have flash memory back then. Currently microcontrollers use a kind of flash memory with long term storage capability, but i know they didnt have 10 year memories back then unless they did it through CMOS or something, and a hidden backup battery, but then where is the battery. Ok maybe they use a large capacitor with the idea that the battery will becomes disconnected from time to time but it will never be disconnected for a month, and if it did woh cares it's just a oil change light (from what i understand).
Just another strangity of the illustrious "Volvo" ha ha.
So anyway, the service light is not that important to me anymore. What i would like to know though is can the 'dome' light stay on indefinitely once turned on manually with the overhead switch. If so i have to take steps to prevent this from happening again it cost me around $220 USD for a new battery. I went out there today but it was a little too hot to sit in the car for a half hour to wait and see if the light goes out, but i'll do it if nobody knows about this yet.
Come to think of it now, why the heck don't the computers have non volatile memory or a back up battery to take over for the few minutes it takes to change the battery. For a car with monitors so hard to get ready i cant see why they didnt do something like this. All it would take is another smaller battery to take over when the power went dead from the normal battery. This is done in a HOST of other products including alarm clocks, security systems, etc., so why not with the computer. It would not be that hard to install a back up system. Possibly just two diodes and a smaller lead acid battery or Li-ion battery although of course i would research this out more completely before doing anything.
Thanks much Steve,
AL in NJ.

Mr. AL,
I have too many other things going on to follow all that you have written above.
However the important take away is this.
If the battery Voltage drops too low or if you replace the battery then the Monitors will become incomplete and need to be reset again.
I can't tell from what you wrote what is happening currently vs. what happened in the past.
Please confirm that you have a Monitor Reset Problem and not a Battery Drain Problem.
Good luck
Paul

Ah th infamous lock controller stuck on syndrome. I wore a thread on this that was censored as being unfit for children. The 2/76 lock controller also controls the dome light switch on these cars and this gets ugly fast.
Move the center switch to the off position is th easy fix

Yes monitors wont go ready easily. There are 6 that are still not ready and i need to flip at least 4 of them to read.
The battery draining issue is a separate issue but it is automatically tied to the monitor problem because if the battery dies the monitors all have to be flipped AGAIN to ready and that takes a lot of time with this stupid car.
The battery draining problem is tied to the dome light because im pretty sure the dome light was on when i got the jump the next day in order ot get the car to the service garage. Hence i am looking for a way to disable the dome light(s).
I note also that there are several dome lights on this car and they cal come on when the front overhead switch is closed.
There are at least 2 in the front and 2 on the sides over the back doors, may be more not sure.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions Paul.

Well it's interesting i never turned the dome light on but it was on the next day when i got a jump to get to the graage.
What i want to do is disable it permanently i dont need it anyway.
Is there a fuse for this in the fuse box?
This stupid thing can make the monitors go south again if it happens again, then it will have to be driven all over the friggin place again. Stupid.
Thanks Steve.

You cant pull the fuse in the lock controller as it is tied into the immobilizer. Just out the center switch in the 0 position and all the dome lights will stay off.
My best guess is that EGR monitor is tied to one of the other monitors amd will clear with it. You don’t have EGR.

Ok well i have two fuses related to the courtesy lamps number 2 and number 15:
#2
COURTESY LAMP CONTROL SIGNAL
[RTI] (MODE SELECTOR SWITCH)
#15
COURTESY LAMPS
DOOR WARNING LAMPS
GLOVE COMPARTMENT LAMP
SEAT BELT REMINDER [RTI]
Can either of these be pulled?
Ok i'll keep the EGR thing in mind, and i dont even know what one looks like.
Thanks.
