Let's Talk Turbochargers: New or Rebuild
Re: Let's talk turbochargers
The round heat shield cap was loose after prying it off and doing all that cleaning underneath. The cap rubbing on the bottom of the turbine wheel would have obviously been a major problem. To fix this, I held the turbo with the turbine wheel facing down so the gap between the heat cap and CHRA was exposed. Then I carefully spread a few dabs of RTV in the gap with a toothpick. Spread it all the way around so it made a nice gasket, pressed the cap down, then wiped off the excess RTV on the outside. I was worried I would make a mess and get RTV on the turbine wheel, but I got lucky this time. I'm letting it dry for 24 hours.

Replaced the turbo oil supply line and associated banjo bolt/washers today. Then as I was putting the new manifold nuts on the wastegate, I realized that I had been turning that one bolt the wrong way, so I was finally able to get the wastegate out. You know what I did next.
Before

After

Below are the turbo water feed and drain lines. You want to get all the coolant corrosion out of those banjo fittings. I blasted these last week.

Now I just need a smaller wire brush to get the rust off the coolant rail where the rubber hoses go on. Then I can put the coolant lines back on and start putting the turbo back in.
