The method in this topic (the photos a couple posts above yours) does not leave the intake as vulnerable as my $25 cold air intake. Mine is right off the ground, while this one is exactly where the stock setup is -- knee/thigh level, at the top of the grille.

Hi guys, I'm new to this site also to the 850 scene,
I have the 94 850 2.5 10v naturally aspirated.
And I understand there are no tuning mods I can do, not like the T5/R but I have made this.

Where did you relocate the MAF sensor to?

I did the same mod on my S70 GLT. Initially, I constructed a homemade Short Ram Intake (there's a thread on that under performance mods with photos). Then I removed the snow guard from the stock intake to improve airflow. I have a 3" Borla exhaust and 16T turbo. I bought a softloader from iPd and have it boosted to 16lbs with blue Bosch injectors. Data logs I sent to iPd showed I was getting plenty of air, but the air was still hot.

I insulated the air box I had constructed and added a flex tube down past the tranny lines and to the grille between the temperature sensor and fog lamp. I wasn't too worried about inhaling water. First because I added it to the stock intake instead of replacing it, second because water is too heavy for the intake to lift any serious amount through that much tubing.

However... I recently tore it all out and put the stock air box back in with a K&N hi-flow filter. Apparently, the Volvo engineers knew what they were doing when they designed the car. I get plenty of air and it's reading cooler than before. I did insulate the outside of the box, but other than that it's stock.

I no longer get that "wooshing" sound from the intake which I loved so much at first, but after a year or so I was sick of it anyway. My Borla exhaust (wrapped in header wrap to cut down on drone) sounds so good I'm glad I don't have all that noise up front anymore.

It really just comes down to personal preference and the joy of tinkering.
'99 S70 GLT:
16T turbo, 465cc injectors, iPd tune, iPd coils, Walbro 255LHP fuel pump, Chrysler 4bar regulator, H&R Springs, iPd anti-sway bars, ceramic brakes, strut brace, B&M tranny cooler, Samco hoses, K&N filter, 3"Borla exhaust.

I am confused here. What's the purpose of mod if it decreases its efficiency? If it affecting average of the car then it simply means that it is affecting car engine also. And on long run this is going to be dangerous as well as pricey also.

I have an IPD short ram and a 7mm phenolic intake spacer on my car. Intake spacer is a good add on. Here is some thought..... The intake is bolted to the head.. The intake and the head are aluminum, heat transfers between the two parts. With the spacer there is no/ a lot less transfer of heat. Here are pics of after driving my car 22 miles work and testing when I got there vehicle running head at 205 degrees and intake at 145 degrees!

So the air will not heat up soo much. Regardless of thought the air only goes in one cylinder at a time. The rest of the air circulates in the intake until the valve opens and draws the air in! Which will allow time for the air to heat up. Your never going to get no heat exchange from intake/ filter temp to cylinder head temp. But you can minimize in different ways!
