OK, last chance.......anybody?........Bueller?........

It's a Lancia Montecarlo. named for the famous rally, since Lancias won a lot of rallies. Called a Scorpion in the US because Chevrolet owns Monte Carlo, and the logo for Abarth is a scorpion. Sold from about '75 to '82.

This car was designed by Paolo Martin at Pininfarina starting way back in 1969 - under contract to Fiat, which was planning a replacement for the 124 Sport Coupe. The coachbuilder Bertone produced the tiny X1/9 design and Fiat jumped on that, as the Montecarlo was too costly for Fiat pricing structure. By that point, Lancia was under the umbrella of Fiat ownership, so they gave the car to Lancia as an upmarket "halo car." It was code-named the X1/20 and Abarth developed it into a screaming turbo race car.

The Montecarlo/Scorpion was intended to have a 3 liter Lancia V6 and be a mini-supercar. Then the 70s oil crisis hit and it it got downgraded to a 2 liter Lancia twin-cam four, the same engine as in the old 124. It made about 120 hp in a very light car, but by the time the emission-choked US version was approved, it had a 1.8 version with........83 hp. It was slow. But handled very well.

They had to add big impact bumpers, tall springs, and ugly headlights to meet US regulations, but they still sold.

Some issues - they rusted. And somebody thought it was smart to boost only the front brakes, on a rear-weight-biased car. So in the rain, the fronts locked up. People just unhooked the booster, but then the calipers and rotors were too small. Eventually the car was withdrawn from the market and a year later a much better Series 2 came out with bigger wheels, better brakes, and moar torkx.

I remembered it because recently I saw a post from a guy swapping in the fantastic Alfa Romeo "Busso" 3-liter V6, which is a glorious howling wonder. It comes from the FWD Alfa 164 sedan, so it's a sideways motor with 5 speed manual transaxle, and it fits! Perfect!

The rally and endurance race cars used the central structural tub with new tube-framed front and rear assemblies, and made up to 500 hp in race form. They beat the Audi quattro's in the World Rally Championship with rear-wheel-drive, and won the Group 5 endurance championship. The last hurrah for Lancia before becoming the Italian Buick.

That is a striking car from 50's or early 60's. It appears to have a rear engine from the air intakes on sides. Poor deck lids fit.
Upscale Italian?

I think it’s an early prototype for the ‘63 split window Corvette.

Could it be a Tatra?? (WTH is a Tatra?!)
I only guess that because I searched for 50’s European sedan rear engine fastback, and found this....

They built some weird stuff.

SIXTY nine, wow, I’m at least a decade off! 2.5 liter V8, huh. Those look like little 911 fans on each side...wait, is it air-cooled??

Reported to have been in production through '75, it followed this one.

It seems all Tatras have been air cooled; they had a OHC 6L V12 (briefly) in 1931. They still build trucks with a giant V12 diesel.

Wow. Those are either visionary or crazy talk.

All that weight hanging off the back, and a fin to keep it going in a straight line?
