Sorry to hear you have had another automotive misfortune. I am normally very cautious of cars that have obviously been abused. There may be other damage you can't see. Years ago, I bought a 940 from a local salvage yard that I thought I could get running. I did not know when I purchased, but it also had a bad head gasket. I later sold it for parts.

Assuming it was overheated, I would just bring the head right to the machine shop and have it resurfaced and checked over thoroughly. Assume it's warped and needs to be skimmed. I've made the mistake of skipping that step... not fun to have to pull it all apart again!
Typically driving at 50 mph, the fan will not come on. It's idling in traffic that get the engine really hot. I'm assuming the previous owner probably overheated it and just didn't care.

No, it just remains open.

I sort of knew that a 30k mi pa commute would kill this car, and it seems to be doing just that. Days after addressing two dead fuel pumps, I got a clunk from N/S/F suspension (either a control arm or drop link probably, not worried about that really), but then something more sinister appeared.
A quarter of the way into my commute home last night the car developed a horrible screeching noise that is present at all speeds and increases in frequency with engine speed. The noise vanishes the second any pressure is put on the clutch pedal (doesn't need to be depressed, even 'taking up the slack' is enough to stop it).
What is this likely to be? Throwout bearing? But then my understanding of a throwout bearing would mean it should shriek when the clutch is depressed? DMF? But there is no rattle or vibrations. Clutch plate? Doesn't slip, I'd have noticed by now with all the beautiful vowel-hiding Welsh hills.

Perhaps a pilot bearing in the flywheel? Should be trackable with a hose pipe in your ear at idle.

Probably the t/o bearing is taking a dump. There is no pilot bearing on these things, so it's not that.

T/O bearings tend to quiet down when under pressure.

It's there or something with a finger on the pressure plate or on the clutch fork itself that has caused the T/O bearing to shift a bit.

Regardless...the trans needs to be dropped.
