Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
Grabbed a spare alternator to find its bearing make even more noise then the original. I did swap the voltage regulator which fixed issues with charging. It almost looked like the one I changed out was a counterfeit Bosch. Look at the stamp marks

I'll most likely be using the FWD brakes, so I'll definitely keep you posted on those. My rear rotors and pads aren't very old, maybe 8k miles on them.scot850 wrote: ↑19 Jun 2021, 16:48 Is it all bolt on change over or is there fab work needed? It may be worth considering this swap on my car longer term as the AWD parts continue to dry up.
Are you going to be using the rear calipers? If they are good along with the backplates I would be interested in buying them for spares.
Neil.
I'm 99% sure it is a direct bolt-on, at least I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be. I know of at least one person who has done this swap, and apparently he didn't have to modify anything. Unfortunately this guy isn't on any forums and none of it is documented, so I'm going off of all of this just based on my own observations and advice from two buddies over on Swedespeed (one of which met this guy and said he did it cleanly).
The best resource I've been able to find has been Matt Micciolo's (SimplyVolvo on forums and Youtube) 850 FWD to AWD swap. He has several videos on Youtube of swapping the AWD multilink rear end into his 850, so I can sort of use that as an idea of what's involved in dropping everything from my car. Hopefully it's as simple as it was to pull everything from the FWD rear end. I had that done in maybe 2 hours total, gas tank, fuel lines, evap stuff, delta link, and everything else involved). It was super easy.

I though I had some pictures showing the AWD swap in to aFWD needed serious fab work in the back. You don’t have the three stops and threads for the infamous bolts holding in the carriage
I think the delta link suspension uses the same post mount the AWD front mount uses, so that is a bolt in at that point at least.

I believe you're correct, from what I can tell, the mounting posts are the same. I remember him having to add threads for something to attach the AWD subframe, but I can't remember exactly what.abscate wrote: ↑20 Jun 2021, 04:54 I though I had some pictures showing the AWD swap in to aFWD needed serious fab work in the back. You will have to swap the rear brakes as the parking brake cable is different and you would have to see if the back plates can swap over to the FWD rear hubs. Then the AWD rear cables also mount to the rear frame. Same would be true of fitting the FWD parking brake system. You will have to check there is somewhere to mount the brackets for the cables forward of the rear wheels.
Fuel tank would need to be swapped as there is nowhere to hang the full tank brackets which hang off the front of the rear subframe.
Fuel filler pipe will also need to be swapped as well as the fuel filter and carbon filer locations to the floor just forward of the RHS rear wheel.
I always wondered as Volvo seemed to make the AWD cars in fairly low numbers if they just used regular frames for AWD cars and bolted up the rear subframe as a modular install leaving the FWD mounts let in place.
I really wish you luck and hopefully all goes smoothly!
Neil.

Finished up the transmission on the wife's GLT today. So far, so good. No leaks, odd noises, or funny shifts.
Didn't get time to work on the COP conversion, but that won't take too long.

Isn't it always a relief to not have a drip of fluid on the ground after a transmission replacement? Nice work!
Thanks! Yup, I pulled absolutely everything from my parts car before scrapping it, and I was anticipating needing all of it. It'll be much easier to just use all the FWD stuff anyway. The FWD rear brakes perform just fine.

I also rebuilt the "new" one, so that was an added layer of stress on the start up. We'll see how things go over the next few days.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑20 Jun 2021, 21:28 Isn't it always a relief to not have a drip of fluid on the ground after a transmission replacement? Nice work!

Decided after finding one of the front calipers on the 'R' had frozen with standing (well technically the piston would move outwards but would not compress all the way home). Discovered the piston dust cover had come out. This is the 2nd one that I have had do this over the years. It lets water in and then damaged the piston preventing it retracting.
As the rear calipers are no NLA I decided with an abundance of caution to take them apart and check the pistons move smoothly. Thankfully both still look like new but could do with some re-painting to keep the bodies that way. That will be a winter project!
I had forgotten what a pain it was to work on the rear calipers as they are unique to this year and model. They have slider pins like the fronts, but Volvo fitted them with little room between the pins and the rea coil springs on the AWD. I found a very short stubby 7mm 1/4" hex socket that was up to the task of removing and re-fitting.
Now waiting for the front pads and rotors to arrive.
Neil.
