That 'odd downpipe' on the exhaust header is the exhaust pipe to the muffler under the car. When you want to go fast and make lots of noise, you unbolt the cap sort of visible at the straight end of the header. Uncorking the headers.

Makes sense, thanks for your post VLN. BMW started doing this as option or standard equipment on M (performance) models 10-15 years ago.

Except of course it's not visible from the outside and they don't have bonkers outrageous side pipes on their cars :lol: It's a valve located somewhere after the cat, controlled electronically from the cabin.

Also, separately around this time, they started piping in fake exhaust sounds through the car's audio system. And yes, they got and continue to get dragged all over the internet for it. And, as sure as the sun rises in the east, many other manufacturers followed suit. :roll:

Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link

Yep. Trying to follow “the rules, conform to The Man!” I’ve seen a completely rusted rat rod here with I think a Pontiac in it, Rockabilly guy driving, big flared headers shooting out to the sides, painfully loud! Nobody seemed to even look sideways at him. Noise ordinance? I guess not.

Which reminds me - why exactly are Harley’s with straight pipes exempt for any noise rules? They’re almost all like that, nobody pulls them over.

Matt - yeah, piped-in fake hotrod noise seems aimed at 10 year olds.

I had a Ford Capri with burned out glasspacks in college and I went to visit my elderly grandmother in Butte (born 1890-ish!) and give her a ride. She said, You better get those “cutouts” fixed or the cops will pull you over! They’ll give you a big ticket! She called them cutouts, thought I had welded them on under the car!

Oh, wait, EDIT!……full circle back to the thread..
It had stamped steel factory wheels, I forgot that! (Not mine)
