Re: I bought a new car today!
I would only buy a VW new and keep it no more than 3 years. VW has never improved in the quality department, they continue to have annoying issues with the latest models right from the start, no matter how many miles. And I still see 2010+ VW with patches of rust! What in this world. That speaks miles about quality control at VW. It is just a company that doesn't care. Audi is a much better choice to keep longer, VW seems to pay more attention with this brand. The Q3 looks like an interesting car that offers the rise seating position without being a large boat like the Q5.

I think you may mean i40 in most markets also known as the Elantra. A friend of mine drives a diesel 2016 i40 for work and it's a slightly larger car than a Cruze and he isn't that keen on ownership though the transmission has been pretty reliable apart from a programming issue with 1st gear which Hyundai fails to have addressed. Great economy but less than intuitive bluetooth interface and minor design niggles.
The i30 is the smaller car that was also released in a wagon version as well as a hatch though the wagon has been dropped here in Oz for 2017. These may be a little small for you though.

i30 was correct. We got the sedan and later hatchback version of the Elantra. Honda Civic/Cruze sized. Then there's the Accent that's even smaller.
i40 looks like the Sonata. That's Camry-sized.

I was mistaken that the i40 is the Elantra, however I see Wikipedia lists the i30 and Elantra as 2 very distinct models and references the 5th and 6th generation Elantras as being built in Montgomery Alabama USA. In some markets such as Israel the Elantra is known as the i35 (midway between i30 and i40 in size) Also Elantras seem to be only a fastback sedan style with no hatch version. There used to be a wagon version however in the 1995 to 2000 model.
If I had the chance to drive one I wouldn't mind a tester for an afternoon or a day.
