Some spray carb cleaner into each hole, slosh, dump until it looks clean
If its really dirty use about 150 ml of gasoline holding it so that the gas goes down into the base and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
AIr dry in the hot sun.

Mike,
I live in the USA and have a 1999 S70 T5. Your system looks very similar to the one on my car, but my car has a banjo bolt that I am not sure I saw in your breakdown. It's #17 in the diagram below. On my car, the orifice of the pipe leading into that banjo bolt was completely full of very hard carbon that was fairly difficult to clear. I could be wrong, but it seems as if that orifice is crucial to the working of the PCV system.
Did you encounter this part on your car, or is this another T5 2.3 oddball variant?

This thread is more geared toward the 1999-2000 naturally aspirated engines which don't have the dreaded banjo bolt. Here are some threads about the bolt and for the PCV job on turbo engines:

Cleaning the oil trap:
Pretty sure I used a degreaser first in hot water but I do not recall. Do that, shake it well and try to get a brush in there where you can, then finish it with a similar rinse using a carb cleaner like Berryman B-12 Chemtool. Protect the eyes!
The degreaser is more environmentally friendly but the carb cleaner will help get out the nastiest bits like varnish or something more coked up. Soaking it for a long time in carb cleaner could be bad for the plastic, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't worry a bit about a short treatment duration.
EDIT: oops I see I am late on this reply, it's been answered ...

This is not a criticism of Mike or his article. However, the article states (in general) "1999+ 5-cylinder" and my 1999 5-cylinder has the banjo bolt. You will note that I simply asked if his system also had the banjo bolt. A legitimate question.FireFox31 wrote: ↑12 Aug 2021, 16:31 This thread is more geared toward the 1999-2000 naturally aspirated engines which don't have the dreaded banjo bolt. MVS is an indispensable resource, but posters do need to be more specific about what model they are working on. There are a lot of posters here who seem to think that every P80 out there is just like theirs. One fine example is the evaporative emissions J-hose which neither of my P80s have but everyone always points to immediately whenever anyone has that error code.
Now. The reason for that is that not everyone here has owned and worked on every possible variation of the P80 and therefore don't know that some variants even exist. Again, this is not a criticism of Mike's DIY article which is excellent. However, there's no reason why a poster such as myself should not be allowed to post a legitimate question such as, "Does your 1999 PCV system have a banjo bolt?"
My question has value, at the least, to point out to readers who have 1999+ 5-cylinder P80s that they might need to consider whether or not they have a completely clogged orifice that would basically defeat all of the other work done.
Again, not a criticism of Mike's write-up. If Mike does not own a 1999+ T5, there's every reason to believe he is not aware that the T5 has a banjo bolt. However, the subject heading is inclusive of all 1999+ cars (although that may be an engine number there).

Yes, a legitimate question which I totally sympathize with. I read through many turbo PCV threads which assumed everyone has the banjo bolt, thus I have info about it in my notes. Thankfully, this naturally aspirated thread revealed that we slower cars don't have it. Hopefully the links above can get you the info you need. Good luck with the job.
Thanks, this is more great info. I'll start with my light-duty environmentally friendly Gunk EBT32 degreaser and hot water, maybe spray some more harsh Gunk FEB1CA foaming degreaser and rinse, then finish with some CRC carb cleaner quickly rinsed out.
And yeah, I caved and bought a spare oil trap in case I find mid-job that mine can't be used. My local dealership will let me return the new one unopened if I don't use it.

Interesting dialog on cleaning the PCV box.
I decided to just replace on my 08 S60 2.5T as I feared cleaning it could lead to issues and having to tear into it again. I ran out of time and ended up taking my parts to an independent shop to do the work. Was fine paying about $600 in labor to do PCV (with rear coolant line along block and driver side of engine), replace thermostat housing, radiator hoses and clean throttle body. As I age trying to get better knowing when paying to have work done is better...
My PCV after 138,000 miles...pretty certain this was original. Oil cap was pushing a little air, wouldn't fill a glove with high pressure but pushing some air nonetheless (cam seals intact). It blew a little and now sucks...ha ha.
