Salty, I no longer feel terrible about my seemimgly permanent garage addition of my 850. Aside from my engine's coronary, all I've found, so far, knock on wood etc) are a couple of cracked engine mounts and some vacuum leaks I mentioned in a reply to another's question. but you, my friend, are fighting the battle of the FordVolvo on the front line for all of us I think. No disrespect to our boys who are truly fighting battles today!
Back to less important things, I was able to crawl under and around mine again last night. Now have the serpentine off, have located the cam sprocket marks (although one of my belt covers with the notches is broken - at the notch of course. But some charitable sole before me referenced another spot on the cover and made a second mark on the pulley to correspond. Thank you whoever you are!
I'm off to find the brightest handheld light known to man today, as I cannot for the life of me find the mark on the camshaft pulley, though. According to the world, it is a notch on the cog toothed pulley, but I can't find it. So I swore at it. That didn't bring it out. More light might.
Hopefully more news tonight. I did do all I could to check the oilway from the pickup tube up. Didn't get very far as it becomes a sort of catacomb once inside the "block", and I can't get anything to follow the path. I'm back to oil pump extraction and Salty's physically invasive actions once in there. As the guy I first worked for in a bike shop used to say, "We'll either fix it, or fix it so no one else can!"
Next session, tonight, I hope. Hang in there Salty, you'll have your new car soon. It'll just be your old one rebuilt.

Grego, I see your oil pump & raise you front crank & camshaft seals - oh, and the new timing belt that the gusher has also claimed. That's it. Ordered an engine out of IPD today. Now dodging phone calls from the Visa cops - call display is a wonderful thing. Your hand.......

So...what are you going to do with that oil pump you just put in your old engine? Just kidding.
I still can't see my freaking timing mark on the camshaft sprocket, but admittedly haven't spent a bunch of time and energy on it yet. What's that engine costing you anyway? I'll sell you a whole car for less than half. You can put your oil pump in this engine, decide which car you want to stick it in/to, and your troubles, er, our troubles are over!
On the positive, that new engine's going to make you fall in love with your ford wagon all over again. I'm sure of it.
I can't match your list of issues, yet, but I can make up for it with lack of time and warm workspace, therefore I'll still be trying to get my oil pump out when you're zooming down the carefree highway.
Good luck, I'll go look for more problems, now that yours are almost over, just so's we don't get cocky.

lookee, I joined, seeing as how I'm a prisoner to this car. Greg in all seriousness I have no idea if my pump will fit an older model, but the one I'm yanking only has 6,000 km (3,000 mi) on it.....seeing as how we have this strange raport (my first internet dating experience), it's your for the shipping if you're interested. In fact, I'll have a complete 204 low pressure motor for parts, although I think I'll try & sell the long block core back to Volvo. Throwing it through a dealers showroom window might be more satisfying, but less profitable & I'll make my statements here. I bought the original motor out of IPD's XC70 project car - you know that Hummer like monstrosity they took to SEMA. It apparently had 1,800 miles on it when it was pulled & while I have to make a few minor changes, it will take care of A LOT of issues with one swipe. $2,000.00 USD...I figure that I'll be out 32 - 3300.00 Canadian by the time I land it here......then I still need to wedge it in there. I realize that it's an amazing deal, but it still hurts. Just have to remember that it's cheaper than the ridgeline. So, if you're looking for an excuse to watch football this weekend, It will take I would think a couple of weeks for me to get this straightened out...do some research & let me know if I can donate any organs.

saltydog...glad to see you got that engine. I saw the price and wondered if it would fit your car and solve your problems. I hope it really does. Please give us the blow-by-blow of installation and how it performs afterwards. Buying from IPD, I'm sure they kept it in good shape...all synthetics in it, etc. They're good people and should help you if you get stuck somewhere in your process.

Salty, that's a very generous offer, and you know, I will do some research on the pump, and if it will work, I'll not kick you while you're down. I'll be fair. I think you may be the only person in N/A who has an oil pump in stock! That's gotta be worth something.
Time is of no real matter here. Anyone who's hung on this long knows that this is taking me a lifetime to finish. I would've been on it despite the cold and frustrations had I not had other options in the garage.
Sounds like you found a great deal on a not-even-broken (in?) engine. And for relative peanuts compared to what I was expecting to hear if you bought a new lump from Volvo. I retract my offer of my car for less than half, sorry.
Now I have to go explain your dating comment to my wife...
Keep us posted, and if you hear someone screaming, it's just me locating my timing marks.
Here's a raised glass to your new engine!

sorry, relax.....it's a Volvo site, not an S & M chat room. If we get there, then we'll talk about the pump. I think I owe MadeinJapan something as well on the IPD tip.....hey, I'm santa all of a sudden! Maybe I'm subconsciously thinking that if I'm going down I want to be remembered fondly. Trust me my freind, I'll be raising more than 1 glass this weekend to my 'good fortune' According to Scott at IPD, engine was at the airport on it's way to Singapore but for whatever reason......it's headin' north!
Blow by bloody blow to follow, stay tuned.

Okay Salty, looks like your oil pump and my oil pump are the same. So I guess earmark that baby for my ford wagon, and when the time comes, let's haggle.
No pressure, just want to be first in line. I'll let you know once I have mine removed, maybe we can exhange email addresses, and I'll send a few photos just to compare yours to mine. Sound okay?
Thanks again, hope you're new engine arrives safe and sound. Now more than ever.
