I just finished the job without using the alignment tool. Looking at the service manual there is an adjustment screw on the horizontal and vertical sides of the bracket. I think as long as you don't mess with these screws you are fine, things will align. I do notice that if you messed up in the alignment, the tensioner pulley will rub against the body of the engine. I could see the pulley almost flush to the side and if it's not aligned that pulley will surely grind and make a lot of noise on startup.
