Finally got the time and schedules to match to help a young lady Volvo owner I know to look at the ABS module. She has a low mileage car (150,000km) 98 V70 NA. Has a few dings but needed to move between 2-4 kids around but had lost ABS,TRACS and speedo. Got the whole trifecta!
Many thanks to our friend Matty Moo at Midwest ABS for his re-built ABS module. Great price and shipping to Canada.
Not been feeling great recently so had to delay once so had to get it done.
Forgot what a pain it is to access these even on a non-turbo. The gear shift cable in the autos is naturally sited to get in the way of the harder to access lower bolts. Had difficulty getting the lower ones to move. Grabbed the mirror on a stick and found that it had been replaced at some point in the past. The owner said it had been serviced by one of the 2 Volvo 'specialists' in Calgary. Whoever fitted it had damaged the heads on the bolts. They are really soft metal and easy to damage if over tightened. Thanks for that! Made a hard job more difficult.
Disconnected the main fuse box which allowed a little more room to get access as the power cable also refused to move.
Recalled that last time I had the bolt issue, I used a 4.5mm 1/4" drive regular hex socket I had. Sure enough worked a treat. Also found my 1/4" finger drive ratchet. great for limited access places.
Installed the replacement module, reconnected everything and no more dash warning lights. She was really happy as her local repair shops had no idea what was wrong.
Hopefully all is now good for a while, but I did see there will be some future repairs needed like tailgate inner panel with broken mounts.
Neil.

There are cheap tools to do this. Depends on if your tensioner has the 1/2" square hole in it or the T55 (?) Torx hole in it. I bought a set of 'stubby' sockets and I have a flat bar with a 3/8" square on it and it works great as you have limited room as you know!
Well done!

Got moved it now for resting place in middle of nowhere for over the winter.
Last MOT seems to been at 2015 for this. Now after brake unjamming and alternator back to life... next obvious will be check where all brake fluids disappears on this. I drove then with motor braking and saved using brakes for only if needed so there would be brake fluid in late of night so no traffic.
P.S. random info about lambda sensors... NGK AFX Stoich is 14.58 and not 14.7 so check what lambda should be as that could be making difficulties if they are different for sure.

Which engine have you got in the car? 1.9l with or without turbo? That is quite a mileage on that car. Otherwise it doesn't look too bad even with the faded red paint of that time!

I changed out my Nivomat rear shocks and springs. Right shock was leaking. Used the Lesjofors springs that said they were for V70 AWD without self leveling suspension, and factory Volvo shocks. So far, ride is much smoother.

Check the condition of the rear sub-frame. Looks ok for what I can see, but the area which corrodes badly is around the rear mounting bolts through the frame into the main steel frame. You can see how the aluminum is being 'nibbled' along the upper edge and that is the start. Try to see if you can clean it off and paint it or clear coat as much as you can to save it for as long as you can.

I have been wanting to drop my subframe for a year now. I have a spare subframe from a 2000 XC70. But my left fuel tank sender float sinks or jams so I need to drop subframe to replace that, and check over fuel lines.
