A good tune up, new cam sensor, etc. on that car should go a long way. Two months car payment isn't to bad.
Glad it ended well.

Just for completeness, I took my car to a independent shop in Santa Cruz, CA called A & E Motorsports. The owner (Jeremy) is a Volvo guy and drives a V70 while his wife drives an XC90. I found him on Yelp and his shop had a 5 star review after 6 years of business! You almost never see a perfect 5 star review. So, I decided to take the car here instead of the Volvo dealer, which is a 35 minutes drive away from me.abscate wrote:Robert gets the Spinner Cup for this one....
I should have advised you to use spray to test for idle fluctuation, well done by the dealer. They earned their money on this one3. Double and triple check for intake manifold leak
In the end, I am glad I did it.
Yes, Robert gets the award! Although I did visually check the manifold and the torque of the bolts, there were areas that a visual from above just could not spot. I have never in my life had a gasket fail on any of the cars I have owned. I didn't even think to look for that. I was looking for cracked or worn rubber hoses and such.

Car payment? What's that? LOL.rspi wrote:A good tune up, new cam sensor, etc. on that car should go a long way. Two months car payment isn't to bad.

My wife and I have a rule. If we can't pay for the car in cash, we can't afford it. Of course this has limited the amount we will pay for a car. This V70 in question was purchased new in 1998 for $36,000. It was the 2nd most expensive car we have ever purchased. The first was a Lexus LS400.
In any case, the car has served us extremely well. My daughter was brought home from the hospital after her birth in this car. Now, it's her first car after getting her license. So you see, this car has nostalgic value. As long as it makes fiscal sense - and maybe when it doesn't - we will keep this car going. It's got 248K miles now and is still in excellent shape. ... now that it runs right. Thanks to all on this forum for helping.

I was looking for major items when I should of focused on the smaller details. Lesson learned. Thanks.

No big props are in order, just wanted to point out the info is sometimes in these long threads, we just have to dig for it. Long thread makes it tough to keep up with the details! Really its just just good to know you got the T5 back on the road, and like Robert says it should run cleaner smoother longer now.

Odd that. How does an intake gasket fail over time? There are no fluids from above to contaminate it. No pressure on it either (OK, a little). It would definitely get hot, no doubt. I wonder if it was dinged or kinked or folded on installation?songzunhuang wrote:Well the verdict is in. The intake manifold gasket failed on #5 and was on it's way to failing on #1. This is disturbing as there was nothing wrong with the bolt torque. A stupid $15 part caused all this issue. I changed the gasket when I changed the PCV system back in August of last year. So the intake manifold gasket only lasted 9 months.
Smoke would have found this. So would have spray (in time). Interesting. I like their technique of checking fuel trim at idle. It wouldn't necessarily tell you WHERE it is, but could infer how bad it is. Very educational post for me as I was going through an irregular Cyl #2 misfire diagnosis myself.
Glad you got it solved Song! Your are indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated VOLVO expert so close! A true treasure!

Hey, I visited Smith College with my daughter when she was doing college tours. We also visit Boston College, Mt. Holyoke and Harvard on the same trip. Alas, she chose a west coast college, but still it's a small world.abscate wrote:I'll award the Spinner Saucer to you for point grubbingerikv11 wrote:Ahem, Spinner cup honorable mention maybe?
