Well it's been a bit of a slow week at work. So only a small update. The 24 mpg trend continued into the most recent tank of 93 octane. So I think I have a new baseline established. Trip to KC got cancelled, next road trip is in April so hopefully I can get some good highway numbers there.

Currently running a midgrade test tank this week should need to refill around Saturday and will report back. With numbers.

Getting new tires and an alignment today. These 850's love to eat tires!

Did some reading over at ecomodder and will be trying a few "ecomods" in the weeks to come.

Be sure to use someone who knows how to do a 4 wheel alignment.

How do you define "eat tyres"? 40-60 k km or more at least should be doable if the car is well.

That is unless you drive very soft sports tyres or winter tyres in the summer or something like that.

My S70 eats through cheap tires (Kellys, Douglas, etc) in under 15k miles. Fortunately those tires come with a 30k mile warranty. :D I really like Uniroyal Tiger Paws on my van, but my tire shop never has them in stock when I'm getting tires, so I haven't had a chance to try them on the S70. Alignment and suspension is good, so other than driving style, not sure what's killing the front tires. My guess is driving style, cause that stick makes you wanna go fast.

Might be the pavement/condition of the roads you're driving. Chipseal and poorly maintained asphalt will accelerate tire wear as well as begin to impact fuel economy. If that's not the case I'd personally stay away from off brand/discount priced tires with a UTQG under 500. I don't know anyone that mount/balances new tires for free anymore: $15-$25 per tire these days. That pays for the difference between higher quality tires that last twice as long. Pirelli P7s I have on my S60 are holding up just fine at 2 years/30k miles. From the looks of them I will get another 2Y out of them. They're 700AA.

Rough asphalt shouldn't have that big of an impact though. We have quite rough asphalt here in Sweden since it has to stand up to 80 % of cars having studded tyres 4-5 months of the year. Very noticeable when you go abroad and it's so quiet everywhere. Though I guess there's rough and rough.

But cheap tyres do have their downsides in many ways..

When I bought my 850 it had three new re-rubbered and one old 2/3 worn Michelin on it. 30-35k km of summer driving later the Michelin was still decent if close to replacement and the three others were closing in.

I've had good luck with Coopers as well. Every car I had Kellys on seemed to eat them, regardless of vehicle weight.

Currently have the winters on. Still looking for a future summer tire...
