Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
I am waving the white flag for the saga that was an attempt to release a seized hitch from a 20$ receiver. After 150$ in fun tools, 3 broken cobalt tips, 3 bent cold steel chisels, and a very nice and fun air hammer i will say i cannot release the inner materials. None appear to be available locally so i may need to custom fab a 1.6" to 1.25 inch adapter for the rusty oem one i pulled from another vehicle. I would by a new one if they shipped to canucks as etrailer lists a new kit for 160$ which is a bit expensive for my taste but would be worth the wasted time at this point.

Getting a stuck hitch out of a recevier has generated many a good YouTube - the best being the guy who chained it around a tree and then mashed the pedal down.

Did it work? I've seen people tie chains to front coil springs and to a bumper on another car to yank them out "safely".

I did a search while we were down south, and has hoping to find one close, but no joy. There was a black and another silver within striking distance, but again, no green.
Still not sure what caused the flat. We didn't hit anything and there is no evidence of a puncture. I tried airing it up a bit to look for clues, but air is leaking out around the valve stem base. (Which might've been damaged while things were run flat while looking for a place to pull over on the interstate).

Well as the 850 fix took a lot less than planned and the forecast rain had not appeared, tools in the car and in South Calgary, what to do???
Oh, Pick-n-Pull is only 10 minutes away and I need a PEM for my buddies son's 06 S60 2.5T AWD. Also a couple of P80's have arrived in the last 2 weeks so maybe the locusts have not stripped all the easy stuff and destroyed the rest getting to it!
Walked into the yard just to see if any of the cars on my list still had a PEM fitted. Prime vehicle was a P1 S40/V50 and there was a V50.
I only took my foam mat with me and a flashlight and zero expectation! Found the V50 close to the entrance to the yard (never happens!) and had a look. If the PEM is there is one of the best sources as it is fitted inside the car so does not corrode like other Volvos that use the same part but are mounted underneath.
Unless you know where to look it is not instinctive where to look. It is actually under the carpet on the RHR door under the rear seat. Bingo! There it was and nice and shiny! Now hopefully it works! Slight saving on a new one if it does $6.50 CDN v's $550+ new!!
My mistake was then going to look at the 2 x P80's. A 98 V70XC and a 00 S70 AWD which was not listed as such on the webpage.
Both had been stripped, the XC had lost all the running gear as far as the rear axle and was mostly stripped internally. The Nivomats where there but they are impossible to remove when the ground is hard as the cars sit too low to the ground to get then out from the rear control arms. Also both had blown boots and they are as far as I know now NLA.
Did have one good parking brake clip! It also had an ignition coil. Normally I don't pull them as my 00 does not need them, but as I seem to be helping on older P80's at under $10 it made sense to have a spare. That was really all that was worth having.
The S70 AWD was more recent and all the running gear was there. I was tempted to pull the angle gear but I had not brought the tools for that.
I decided to go get my tools and see what else I could salvage.
I don't have a LHR door actuator spare so that came home, along with a spare RHR and RHR (NLA) that even if the thermal resistors fail I have spares that I can swap into the motors courtesy of AZGiant on Alibaba.
Front door check straps next as they are more common than rears which I have.
Then into the engine bay and there is a MAF there which I could not remove from the snorkel which was in like new condition so that and the PTC came as well. 2 more parking brake clips, a new looking coolant header tank and a mint power steering tank with no sweating!
Looked at the coil packs and 4/5 original coils and all cracked in the same place. 5th was an after market and looked new. So brought that home. I did not have tools to remove larger stuff so went to the XC again and found the MAF inside the car so that came home as well as the owners handbooks for both cars.
Also pulled the 2 ABS modules. 99% chance they will be bad but you never know and they can always be cores I can send to Matty Moo.
By then I was getting sun burnt so headed home. Didn't have time to check the ETM on the S70.
Strangely both AWD cars rear subframes were not corroded through so possibly not original Calgary cars.
As they know me at that PnP and they know I help others they give me a 10% reduction on parts which is very kind. But the kick in the nuts is they are now charging a 10% 'Environmental' fee, and also core charges on nearly everything. That is a rip off I have to say, and some popular parts have had their prices jacked. MAF's are now $50 + core charge?? Door actuators are now $40 + core charge!
One thing I also was tempted to take was a near mint SC-816. If I didn't already had 2 I might of as especially that one is a factory reconditioned unit. At $15 + core charge?? not a lot but not something I need.
Neil.

Hi,
Well i finally got around to fixing the panel that holds the secondary (back seat) cigar lighter plug. It had broken loose several years ago and today was a nice day out so i glued it back on. It looks fairly normal now. It was just hanging off the back of the center arm rest the only thing holding it on was the wires (ha ha). Looks ok now.
Also, while i was out there i installed a secondary rear view mirror on the passenger side. It's a smaller mirror that mounts on the top of the regular mirror. It helps you see at directions other than what the main mirror is set for.
What happened was as my great neighbor was driving my car back and forth to work to get the monitors right for inspection, he preferred backing into the driveway while i always pulled right in forward and when i went out i would back out. it may be a little safer to back in and then just pull out forward, so i started backing in too. I found that it helps to have the mirror set so i could see the driveway side curb so i can get close to the curb so others have plenty of room backing out around my car. The secondary mirror seems to help quite a bit.
They are available on Amazon but im sure other places too, and they come in many different sizes. I cant see getting one too small though or it wont help much for all the trouble of mounting it, so i got a medium size one which seems ok. If it proves to work out well over the coming months and in winter too, i might get a larger one if i can find it and maybe mount this one on the drivers side.
In any case, well worth the relatively small price tag so i just cant help but recommend it. That's unless you plan to register your car as an antique at least in NJ because i know they dont like modified cars classified as antique, and that means almost no modification even a small mirror i bet.
Check them out see what you think. I'll post a pic at some point.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.

I have a 2 inch mirror like this on the passenger side of my V70 and a 3 inch on the much larger PS mirror on my truck. They are not great for detail, but you can see large objects in the otherwise blind spots. Mine came from local NAPA store with adhesive backing.

In Europe there was a door mirror that had 2 angles on the glass. I think I may even have one that I got from someone from Sweden who had sold their P80 and had bought it there but not fitted it! Genuine Volvo item!!
