1992 was the last year for 740. That car is a 940. $1,800 is cheap. I wonder what's wrong with it? Besides the aftermarket wheels. Here are some photos of my 91 740 turbo the day I bought it with 191K for $3,800. Everything worked but the power antenna. $40 and 15 minutes later I installed a replacement mast, then absolutely everything worked. I replaced all 5 tires, fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator, filter, coil, plugs, wires, cap rotor, crank sensor, airflow sensor, thermostat and antifreeze, and finally the exhaust system. The only problem I actually had was the mass airflow sensor went and the resonator rattled. I replaced the rest as preventive maintenance as all were still factory except plugs and thermostat. The engine is non interference so no worries about timing belt failure taking the engine out. I have daily driven my 740 since I bought it in July. It has been reliable. Drives like it should. All for less than a $6,000 investment all inclusive. I have put 10K miles thus far. Here are some photos from the day I bought mine. My 740 is used, but well kept when I bought it. That is original paint. The entire suspension is factory with no clunk, rattling, pops. Even the struts are factory. The car didn't even need a alignment. June

That is indeed a nice 740. I had a 89 760 turbo in same color scheme. Difference was I had to have the engine re-built as the speedo had been 'clocked' for mileage and a problem with oil passing stuck/broken piston rings had oil blowing past the rings and into the breather system. Paid $5000 to an ex-Rolls Royce mechanic to re-build the engine and for parts. Ran beautifully afterwards and then I sold it as someone needed it more than I did.

Still liked it but a little lacking in headroom with a sun-roof for me.

Come to think of it, I think I have a set of beige plastic floor mats for a 740/760 I was given a couple of years ago by a guy selling off his Volvo spares and he just added them to the pile! I think the only issue was some oil had dripped on one but they were otherwise unused!

But it was one of the many small revelations I’ve cataloged in my driving life: the throttle was so gradual and wonderful. Not at all like American cars where the first 50% of gas pedal travel is 90% of the actual throttle input.

The other controls were likewise very accurate and had amazing, tactile feedback.

"KAMEEL" is funny! We could call this "Slow Sand Glow" for the Camel yellow color. I'll bet those old Camel Land Rovers were about as slow with a 4 cyl diesel.

It must have been a 240 that I drove. I don’t remember the model, I only believed it to be a 300 because of the body… but the 240 and 300 shared the same sheet metal, so…

You know more than I do, but I think the 220, 240, 300 were similar mechanically. At some point wasn't there a 5 or 6 cylinder diesel? I think my B-I-L had a 220 in Ft Collins, eventually gave it away.

Some great views and insight on the Gordan Murray Cosworth V-12. As he says, maybe the last and best V12 ever built.

4 liter, 392 lbs total weight, 12,000 rpm, 670 hp (NA), with low-end torque. Crazy talk.
Bore 81.5, stroke 63.8, 14:1 compression ratio, titanium valves, titanium connecting rods.
71% of maximum torque (345 lb-ft) at 2500 rpm

Wait till after 6:00 when they begin a Le Mans lap full rpm test.

I don't know how I missed this post last month. Mercedes made 220, 240, 300 and maybe a 200 in some markets. All were the W123 body series. Some have described this as the best Mercedes series ever. Some were diesel and some were gas. The diesels were 4 and 5 cylinders of the same design (the 300 was a 5 cylinder). The 300 had a turbo option.
In my non running Mercedes collection, I have a 240 and two 300's. The 240 was a daily driver for a while, but my wife hated it because is had no interior trim and terrible seats. I liked driving it with the 4 speed manual.
