The 2.5L version has the AW50/51 transmission. If would ask for a more complete description of what the transmission is doing or not doing. The B4 Servo issues usually does not affect 2004 and newer models but you cannot rule it out. Axles do pull out of the transmission. Some people will run a CV joint until it is completely gone.

Happened on an S60 I bought. Told me it had a bad transmission, and being an AW55 I figured that's what it was. Got it up in the air, and sure enough the passenger side axle was totally split apart about an inch from the transmission. Popped in a new axle and it drove great.

would i be totally crazy for taking on another head gasket? the description sounds like a total engine overhaul but it does seem interesting with the new clutch

That does look nice. Guess I would want to know who did the clutch. It's an S40, those are tiny cars, but probably you have considered that.
