Re: Non-Volvo car chat megathread
Auction notes it's a charity sale, and 'running' in CapitalSpeak means a brave person could drive it home. Hard to say why some stuff ends up with them, but this one looks nice enough to be a legit donation - although I'm with you, keeping it up to date on maintenance might have helped the decision. Also, taxes.

Dug this up....
https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used ... attroporte
“ It also has the potential for unreliability. My cousin Kevin spent so much money on keeping his Maser going that in the end he had to move to France to get away from it, and he hasn’t come back yet.
But the Quattroporte still has that wonderful badge, looks lush and goes like stink, yet it costs the same as a packet of crisps. It’s so pretty that you can see why people sell their souls.”

Maserati has always been in the sedan game... not that you'd know by the sound of their name: "Maserati". It sounds exotic and fast. It's always sounded to me like "Ferrari", as if they'd be sports car competitors.

"I only build the race cars."
- Alfieri Maserati (he didn't actually say that)
I didn't learn 'til much later that the Maserati brothers finally sold the company to the Orsi family in 1937. So all those fantastic race and road cars of the 50s and 60s were not designed by the Maseratis. They had a 10-year contract obligation with Orsi, and left in 1947 to form O.S.C.A, or "Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili—Fratelli Maserati S.p.A." ..whew!
They went back to small, lightweight race cars and some street cars, and collaborated with Alfa Romeo etc on racing engines.
"The OSCA factory was located in San Lazzaro di Savena outside Bologna, where Maserati were originally made from 1926 to 1940. Their basic business goal was to develop an automobile to compete in the popular Italian 1,100 cc racing class."
Ooo, I just found this tidbit -
"The beginning of a genius idea came out of a conversation between Omar Orsi and Gino Brancati, one of the top-class motoring journalists covering the Modena area at the time: to take the engine of a racing car and put it under the bonnet of a saloon. The first Maserati Quattroporte was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1963. This car with two souls, performance and comfort, became an immediate success and with its 240 kph it was the fastest sedan in the world."

I looked up the development of the Quattroporte ("4 doors").
Series 1, 1963, Aluminum 4.1L twin-cam V8 with four downdraft Weber carbs, 260 hp. 5-speed or Borg-Warner automatic. Designed by coach builder Pietro Frua. 230 made.
Series 2, 1966. Trim and detail changes, more conventional rear suspension, 4.7L V8 with 286 hp. 500 made.
In 1971, the Aga Kahn ordered a custom built new version. It was also designed by Frua. It had a 4.9L version of the V8 with 296 hp. It was production-ready, but Citroen purchased Maserati and wanted a new Quattronporte based on their SM coupe. Only two of the Frua cars were built - one for the Aga Kahn, one for the King of Spain. I dig the wheels.
Citroen takes over Maserati and builds a new SM-based, V6, front wheel drive car. This is the famous Maserati V6 from the SM. Hydropneumatic suspension ala Citroen. "The 1973 oil crisis and the collapse of Citroën’s finances in 1974 prevented Maserati from gaining the EEC approval for the European market. The production did not commence until 1976, and each Quattroporte II was built to order and sold in the Middle East and Spain where the type approval wasn’t needed. Only twelve production cars were built from 1976 to 1978."
Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, but I don't think they're pretty. Citroen spent a fortune on development and only produced 12 cars.
Then De Tomaso (Remember the Pantera?) took over ownership of Maserati. The Quattroporte was revived as a big, rear-wheel-drive, V8 sedan, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. DeTomaso got rid of everything French. Production was begun in 1979. I've seen one, they are big, they weigh 4000 lbs. 4.9L Kyalami V8 with 276 hp. 5-speed or Chrysler automatic. The last of the Italian hand-built cars. Almost 2200 built. Several armored versions were built in the 80s, including a State car for the President of the Italian Republic.
In 1993, De Tomaso sold his Maserati holdings to Fiat (which is why there was a combined Ferrari-Maserati-Alfa Romeo-Lancia-Fiat group for quite a while). Fiat built a stretched Maserati BiTurbo coupe into a Quattroporte sedan, but more compact than the old days. Powered by a twin-turbo V6 and then 330 hp twin-turbo V8 with 6-speed manual, it was designed by Marcello Gandini.
Ferrari took over 50% of Maserati and revised its dated production facilities and quality.
What they call the Quattroporte V is from 2003 on. These are variations of what foggy dog posted above. Several facelifts have happened since.
Big, 4300 lbs, with Ferrari-based V8s from about 400 to 450 hp, and very plush inside. I think they're cool, but apparently UNreliable. They sound really good! Don't be fooled - that's a Ferrari...

A funny story about my encounter with an 80s Quattroporte -
When I was a kid, our neighbor across the alley had a 4-lift garage with a full machine shop in his back yard. I would go watch from the door. He was the retired head mechanic at the big Cadillac dealer in Denver - as a young man, he replaced the timing chain on Mae West's Duesenberg. In this shop, he built his own Cadillac-powered creations, and did the mechanical restoration on collector's cars. He could machine anything out of a lump of steel, always with a cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth. "Bud."
I walked by and there was a brand new Quatrooporte sedan in his shop yard - I had seen one in a magazine. "That's a Maserati!".. I whispered to my dad. He shrugged...so?
This car, almost new, had every single lid opened, door cards out, seats out, dash apart, and wires everywhere. The owner had some dealer-unsolvable electrical issue so they brought it to Bud. That thing sat there for days like that, with him testing and staring at manuals.
