The idea of heat is to expand one part faster then the other so that the two get some separation.
For example: If your try to get a nut off a bolt, you focus the heat on the nut. The nut expands faster then the bolt and pulls away from the bolt.
In the case above, one would heat the manifold and leave the bolt cold.

Just tried it out on a stud from the turbo... I been using a small pipe wrench with a short pipe for leverage
Did this wax thing and It Worked like a charm...
I used a tiny birthday candle almost a 1/4 of it , thats all it needed...
I never heard of it before today.... What a Time saver, 100 candles are cheaper than a can pb blaster....

Hi can someone tell me if this the correct way to line up the timing marks? I've seen it a few different ways, Is the metal that's sticking out, On the left corner that where my crank marks should be in between?
I'm not a 100% sure.
Thanks guys.
Why do my pictures show up upside down? ???

It is correct.
When there are two marks on the crankshaft gear, you align the third mark to the valley between the two marks.

Hello everyone.
Yet another two questions, almost ready to get the head back in and together.
When you put the water pump back in do you or would use a tiny bit of sealant? Or just use the gasket alone?
2nd Question- when assembling the upper half of the head the camshaft portion do you apply sealant to both sides?
Thank you...
Jay

When I did my water pump on my 99 s70 (similar.. not the same) I used an Aisin pump and it came with a green gasket. I used no sealant at all and I have had no issues at all..
On the camshaft cover, I have never done that but you do have the correct sealant right? It's not RTV. It's a special Anaerobic Sealant. I read through this thread and you asked about sealant around the head-block but I didn't see any discussion around the cam cover-head. I wanted to make sure you had the right anaerobic sealant for this particular set of parts.

Hi Ambleman
Yes im using the Anaerobic Sealant , Applying it with a 3 inch foam roller.
I also got a Aisin pump, I guess ill see if this one last more than 10k miles or longer than 2 years! Grrrr
Just checking. I didnt use any last time I replaced it.... Just getting opinions.
Not using any sealants on the head gasket. Consensus Was Don't Need Too... used it once Years ago on a Cadillac but I didnt have those heads milled or anything,Even used the same head bolts it all worked out fine... use to pull a 2. horse trailer with that car.... 1979 Fleetwood Brougham what a car! It even spoke to me when I rode it on a flat tire once, ! WOP WOP WOP All the way to a service station. ( I can make that joke im Italian) lol
Next will be do I oil the head bolts? Lite coating on the threads and under the heads of the bolts?
Thanks

I just did this part. Anaerobic sealer only on the top half of the cam cover. If you put it on the lower head half, it'll be inside the oil galleries that run along the head. Put it on really thin - it'll squeeze out even when thin. Keep it about 1/4" away from cam bearing journals.
