How does that unlock process work? Do they just need proof of ownership?

I call Bill Knight Lincoln Volvo of Tulsa, connect to parts dept, provide serial (vin doesnt work if unit is not original to car), they look it up and tell me the 4 digits. There ya go!

I fortunately have friends at th elocal dealer parts departments, so they get regular e-mails with the Radio serial number and model info and they find me the code. Helps that I worked with them or have been a customer for many years and they know I am a junkyard parts puller, as well as an MVS member. At the age the head units are now, they are often not from the Vin# they are found in and who steals these these days anyway?

Had this issue with a 98 manual climate control system. Solved it by resoldering the pin connectors which restored defrost, AC activation, and other controls.
This one is ECC. Its changed output on me only once, since I bought it. I can't pull codes on it either since it's a 99 as 850obd2 wont talk to it.
I was able to pull ECC codes in my 99 S70 AWD using 850-OBD2.

That’s interesting, I’m surprised that worked. I figured VIDA was the only option for a 99.
Maybe since the ECC isn’t CAN bus it still communicates with 850 OBD2.

Autel 800 or higher series will pull ECC codes from a 99 , as well as CDM and the higher end engine parameters like cam flank angle

It's been awhile, but I dont think I was getting anything at all when I tried connecting to my 99 s70. I think it just stopped.

I did it back in 2019. It was right after the dev released a big update to support some functions on 99 cars. There's quite a bit more supported now, but I no longer have a 99 to test on.
