The S70 changed to the cartridge, not sure when in the later models and that does not spin freely as the gasket is in contact with the threads all the way down.
Yeah, this was a first for me, with the cartridge inside the reusable plastic housing. I think it's kinda weird, as it's like going back to the 50's small block Chevy, although I never changed one of those, I remember seeing it mentioned in magazines about converting to spin on.

The Volvo must keep some oil above the filter, as I got a small flood as soon as the o-ring was free. I had assumed I'd be able to pull it down without spilling. That might have happened with the 850 spin-on too.

1999 turbo models went to the plastic housing and insert. NA kept the metal 917 filter.

P2 went to the insert in 2001

My 00 NA had a plastic filter. The metal OE Volvo filter has a non-return valve in it to keep the top end primed with oil. There are many aftermarket ones, but no idea which ones have the valve included. Maybe Mann?

Washed the S70! Well, just drove it through the automatic car wash really. I'm not big on hand washing, especially this time of year. I also vacuumed out the driver's side foot well.

I need to top off the anti-freeze, and check the oil. I noticed the coolant looked down a little the other day, and I haven't verified my oil is fully topped off since changing it, Sunday.

On sunny (but still wet/cold-39F) days like this, I look longingly at the 850 that's waiting for me.

Just realized that looks like negative 39. It was above zero, not below....actually reached low 40s.

Today I worked on the rear shocks.
I removed the first shock mount bolt on driver side. Sheared it off. Remembered on stuck bolts, Robert loosens then tightens then loosens again to prevent shearing. I did that on the 2nd one and worked fine. Both on passenger sides did not get stuck. Went to hardware store to buy 4 new flange bolts and a cobalt drill bit. Came home and installed new passenger side shock mount with blue threadlocker. Drilled out half of the sheared screw before running out of ample power in drill batteries. Took a 2-4hr break. Came back out and finished drilling out the sheared screw. Definitely nicked the chassis threads. Removed brake caliper and rotor to adjust emergency brake and reinstalled. Removed old driver side shock and replaced with new one. The nicked bolt hole was still good and accepted the new bolt with blue threadlocker. Finally new shocks and mounts means I finally got the volvo back on the road! I ripped down east main st! Soooooooooo fun! I have more tasks to complete soon. Non-working horn and rear windows might need regulator swap.
