hi all well today being the best weather for ages i decided it was a good time to steam into the odd few advisory notes from the last mot a driveshaft boot and track rod end boot both rotten and leaking so i also took the dremel wire brush to the reluctor rings and used contact cleaner on the wheel speed sensor hoping the random appearance of the abs warning light, really do not want to have to open up the abs module for resoldering and the rings had masses of rust and the gaps filled with driveshaft grease and dirt, next is the shafts on the wipers.long live the volvo, :D

Realized I had finally used most of the tank of gas from last November, in the 850. I didn't drive it all winter, and have only been driving it around town. Filled it back up with a discount card I was given for the gas station I go to....10 cents off per gallon!

Got most of the dash back in. Just the radio and the driver's side undertray, oh and the elephant in the room the whole bundle of wires and 2 boxes for the aftermarket entry system. Decided I will leave that can of worms and the elephant until tomorrow.

Decided to look at the window wiper mechanism while in the pile that is my R dashboard repair and while it was out.

Glad I did. One side the shaft was near perfect and no real signs of any rust on the bearing surface and shaft, the other one is badly rusted, especially at the bottom:

I have been using an old thread for info and it is fairly straight forward, but essential you mark the arm positions prior to removing the mechanism.

I am using 400 grit wet/dry and WD-40 as a lube to try to clean the shafts. The better one was not really needing much, but the bad side is almost beyond repair due to deeper rust pitting. I will do the best I can with this but have to be careful not to get too aggressive or I will end up with a lot of slop on that arm which will likely lead to judder.

I will give it a little more cleaning before rebuilding with plenty of grease.

Well I think I have got the PitaR back together after the mammoth dash repair. Final major job was to wrestle the aftermarket remote start and immobilizer back up under the LH side of the dash. As my old bones don't bend too well, I removed the driver's seat and laid foam mats along the floor so I could lay out flat under the dash. I think it is successful and the car did start afterwards so I can only hope it continues to do so.

I think I have refitted everything other than re-torquing the windshield wiper arms. I tired yesterday, but they just kept tightening, even though the torque is only 20Nm which is not much. Tried wrench on a random bolt and literally finger pressure was sufficient for the wrench to click. On the wiper arms I was still wrenching hard. Hm.....!

So other than tidying my garage which looks like a whirlwind has gone through it, I still have the summer rims to fit, but hopefully a fairly quick job as the car is sitting on slave rims and I cleaned everything before laying the car up last year for the winter.

Next need to organise to get the 850 with the wonky water pump delivered and swap the pump out and see if the knock disappears hopefully.

Last night I went out to a small city outside Calgary and met the nicest guys. This is the father and son team who plan to swap an 04 auto C70 which has frame damage but a good HPT turbo motor, into their 00 S70 NA manual. The father is a serial Volvo owner and repairer and they have multiple P80's and P2's that they have resurrected. I think they have the skill and possibly the enthusiasm, but it is a huge unknown. I'm thinking they have a 99 S70 GLT auto. If they want the HPT turbo engine this may be an easier swap. Auto to auto. Then once that is successful, then swap the 2 x S70 transmissions over and that way you still end up with the end goal but possibly easier to attain.

Replaced the blown out tie rods (inner and outer), replaced the sway bar links, re-replaced the sway bar links after the Meyle HD link broke, and went and got the alignment done.

The "alignment" is probably the worst I've ever seen. Steering wheel is pointed at 2 o'clock. Car pulls aggressively to the right now. I can't make sharp right turns anymore. Going back to NTB in the morning instead of enjoying my Saturday.

They made up something about how they can't access the steering box to straighten the wheel. I think they just picked one tie rod, tightened it until the specs were close, and shipped it because I was the last appointment before the weekend.

Yeah, that's a load of crap lol. Lock the steering wheel straight, then adjust the tie rods to spec. Done. Sounds like they have some lazy employees at NTB!

Exactly what I was thinking, but I was sick of arguing. Might just straighten the wheel myself in the morning so all they have to do is the fine adjustments, since it's too hard for them. Only reason I went to that NTB was because they have done a great job in the past, but I suppose that was before the post-pandemic labor shortage.

Those chain places get the people who think they know what they're doing, but don't. There are some who genuinely care and want to take care of the customers, but there aren't too many of those people unfortunately.

Independent and specialty shops can get expensive, but they are worth the premium!
