Hi,

Isn't that a typical bar code laser scanner? We have them around here a lot. I hate them. Almost always end up calling someone to fix something with it anyway.

The scanner we would need for parts would have to scan the part, probably not a big deal, but then how do we tell the system where we place it in storage. Maybe have the system have a blank part that requests being filled in later with a photo of WHERE it is placed, and if inside a bin, a picture of the bin.
What I do now is place small parts in parts boxes with small dividers, then label the boxes with a number like P116. Then, write down the part and the box it is in, and where the box is located in the storage area. That's the only way I can deal with it, but I do get lazy sometimes and don't catalog a new part just coming in and so it gets misplaced sometimes. It requires extreme diligence to do it right.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Ah, the good old days of PCB assembly! You're right, they should have changed the part number or revision, then if they didn't want to continue making the old part the customer could change things on their end or source it somewhere else.

A large manufacturing plants where I used to work had an extensive warehouse system. Each item in the warehouse had a part number created when the part was designed or specified for purchase by engineering. When the actual parts where ready to store in the warehouse, it was given a ZARB location. ZARB is Zone, Area, Row, Bin. They had about a dozen Zones in different parts of the various buildings. Large parts were often stored outside, but they still had a ZARB. A complex inventory computer system was kept up to date with inventory in and out transactions. The cost, weight, history and description of the part was also stored and all information was available from any computer in the manufacturing network. It was maybe 99.95 percent accurate. But it took a small army of clerks and warehouse workers to keep it going. This was all before barcodes were a thing.

Made the mistake of going to the junkyard(s) again today. I need absolutely zero, but like to see what is there as one yard does not specify the model variant. V70/V70XC/V70 GLT/V70 T5/V70R are all listed as V70. I found this out recently when 2 x V70R's appeared but I did not find out early enough. They also don't show pictures so you have to go see.

Actually I wanted to check a 00 V70 SE in the PnP yard that had just come in. I need a better pair of roof trim strips as one has started to split. Easy to pull and about 5 minutes work.

I definitely have an issue when it comes to SC-900/1 head units as one of the 2 x 00 S70's had an SC-901 and cable and amp. That yard is expensive as I nomally pay $30 CDN for the head unit and this weekend all radios are on sale for $10. The other yard charges $50 CDN for a radio with a CD player! The amp is the same price at $35.

I pulled some parts for hard working friends as well, ETM, inlet VVT solenoid, various trim pieces as well as another beige trunk liner. Just can't let those get scrapped! I now have 3 and no beige interior cars! :o

The roof trim are the long thin plastic strips onto of the load covers.

No, this is a full on AI-controlled "smart" scanner type of machine. I have no idea how it works, that's beyond my pay grade lol. It seems that it's able to recognize items placed under it, and it rings them up that way. No bar code required.

My local Circle K has one, but they haven't gotten it to talk to the rest of the system, so it sits. It replaced older self checkouts that quickly were taken advantage of. Those sat dormant for months after the issue was discovered.

I was so confused when I saw it... I had never seen anything like it!

Probably the same sort of thing people did at Walmart before they cracked down harder on self checkout security cameras and whatnot. Scan one thing, "scan" the next thing, then bag both, etc. Good way to get some discounts I guess!

As far as self checkout in general, I've always liked it. I always go for it when it's an option, since it's usually quicker. That said, at least a couple manned registers are necessary. There are plenty of people who want the personal touch, have a lot of things to scan, older people who probably don't know how to use the self checkouts, etc. I like to have the option. Usually I just want to get out quickly without dealing with anybody, so self checkout is great.
Lowe's has gotten pretty bad with it though, it's nice that they have expanded to so many registers, but the problem is they never have any manned registers. Last time I was at Lowe's, there was a huge backup at all the registers because ONE person didn't know what they were doing, and had 25,000 questions for the employee. This is something that could have been handled off to the side, or at a manned register. No need to hold people up over that stuff.

I have a bunch of boxes with a big “VOLVO” in Sharpie. A bunch of other boxes with “Alfa.” Sometimes I write where they go on the car.

That’s my inventory system.

Hi,

You mean you write on the car body itself? That must look interesting after 10 or 20 parts come in.
