One thing I don’t like about the metal filters is on lightly used cars the top of the filter rusts out. I’ve had two of these cars blow out oil filters on cold starts from top filter failure, using Wix filters. Water pools on top and does it’s damage there. I have rolled the o-ring on the insert type once , that makes a nice mess, too.

I make a note to change the metal kind out annually even on low use cars. Naturally, the FreeCP program makes that easy on the running cost.

I just don't like the rubber 'O' ring on the newer paper element plastic cup. It is way too easy to snag the ring. I lightly oil the ring and just turn it slowly and if I feel any binding stop and let the 'O' ring settle and then continue. So far so good, but not something I enjoy. With the metal ones, never had a Volvo one rust out on me. Only issue is when some knucklehead cranked them on so tight that it took the old screwdriver through the can to get it off as the filter wrench just crushed the can!

Anyway, it is what it is.

I really wonder how/why people crank on those spin-on filters so tight. Get it nice and tight by hand, and that's it. Never put a tool on those to tighten them. Seat it, then 1/2-3/4 of a turn. Done!
When done properly, you should be able to remove them by hand. Occasionally it'll take a wrench to break it loose just from pressure/heat cycles tightening it up, but if you have to go full barbarian on it, the last guy screwed up!

I have to remind myself of that every time as the sealing is the O-Ring exerting pressure to the side of housing. There is no mating/sealing surface at the top as with canister filters. Muscle memory and old ways are hard to change especially when in a hurry.

I was going to check for that, last time I did the oil on my 850, but I had used a smaller diameter filter the previous oil change. I don't recall there being rust when I had the larger diameter filter the previous time. I wonder if I still have that filter kicking around. It would have been a Mahle. Now the car has a fullsize Baldwin on it, but since I'm not driving the car in the salt, I'm not expecting any rust.

I have rolled the o-ring on the insert type once , that makes a nice mess, too.
Thankfully, I have not done that. It's something I'm a little nervous about, and therefore quite conscious of the risk when I'm doing the job.

You will feel it if it’s out of place. The plastic cap won’t screw in nicely by hand.

I put the underbelly cover back on today, after confirming my oil filter leak stopped. I also received a parts shipment from Rock Auto today. It was a Power Steering Reservoir Line Hose and Thermostat. I looked at the position of my V70 NA 2.4 engine, and said there's no way I'm going to try to take it off. The lower torx bolt is tucked behind the thermostat housing and blocked by the power steering pump.

Almost forgot - I got front-ended by a Gen 2 Sienna backing up to get a parking space (a rarity in NYC). I saw the reverse lights come on, but never thought they would knowingly back right into me. My license plate screws put two dents in her rear bumper (which appeared to have been replaced), but my V70 didn't show a scratch.

Is there any way to know if your car originally came with an underbelly cover? From what I see online it seems that it's uncommon.

Also is there supposed to be a cover between the bumper and subframe?

What I did today was use the car to bring stuff to a storage unit and I've discovered that my key doesn't work on the tailgate and passenger side locks. I'm not sure it's a changed barrel because the tailgate turns when the car is unlocked. Are there common jamming issues here or a way it can be reassembled wrong?

What is it that you wanted to remove? The thermostat is easy to change. I have one to do to. I've not touched the power steering on either of my cars.
