GKN passenger side cv axle carrier bearing noise

Post by arrrxivvv »

I ordered a GKN passenger side CV axle from FCP euro,

it's carrier bearing is making some noise when I turn it by hand:

may need to turn the volume up a little bit.

Is this normal? Or do I need to tell FCP euro to send another one?

I have yet to change a passenger cv, so maybe I'm wrong, but this seems like a non-issue since this is an exterior part intentionally exposed to the elements, cv issues are mostly from the boots, and this part is not intended to be sealed like an axle bearing. On top of that it's secured to the engine so I don't think it's going anywhere.

- Old bearing will sound "rao rao rao etc" when spun bc the grease dries out.

- This is a brand-new GKN axle, so the bearing should be smooth and quiet. Do you have another axle (used) to compare?

- GKN is reputable brand (the original mfg), so I guess it is OK.

- The carrier bearing is sealed. There is a seal on both sides of the bearing. Look carefully, you will see it. Conceptually, no difference than a bearing in the serp belt pulley...

If I remember correctly the axle on my car did not have that bearing noise when I inspected it last time. Will check it again.

Your best bet right now is to contact FCPEuro and ask if they can get the same axle they currently have in stock,
then ask them to listen to the video you posted and compare with their stock item.
If they sound the same, then I guess no worry.

Thanks, I'll try to get them to check the video, though the axle appears to be shipped from another location in Utah instead of from their usual location at Milford CT.

Will see what they say next week.

Yeah, FCP has drop shipped parts in a few of my recent orders.

Don't worry about "drop-ship", many companies do that to be efficient and save them money.
Instead of shipping from Utah to CT (where FCPEuro is located), then to San Diego (your location),
it goes directly from Utah to you.

I have received stuff from FCP that is dropshipped, no issues.

Yes, of course there is no issue with quality etc. no one is (or should be) "worried" about drop shipping from FCP or anyone else.

The point is, FCP won't have the parts on-site in that case, to inspect and answer questions. So we may expect more of that going forward.

In the end I simply ordered another one, it has less noise but the feel when I hand rotate them is similar.

So the first one might actually be ok but I just sent it back to FCP.
