Would you buy 3-4 year old Transmission oil?

I have been offered 8 liters of Volvo trans oil (3309) that is still in sealed containers for $100 CDN (About $75) US. Would you buy it and use it? Here in Canada the dealer sells it for $30/liter.

Yes. It might actually be better because any particle contaminates will have settled to the bottom and will not be poured in transmission.

I really don't need it as the 06 XC70 was just changed about 10,000km ago and the 'R' less than 1000 km ago, but like all these 'good' deals I can't seem to say no!

This gets me into a lot of issues, like the full SC-901/amp/Dolby amp and cables on their way. Again don't need it really but hat to see it ending up in a landfill!

Now if I could just figure out how to get to near Kelowna B.C where there are a whole bunch of 98 V70 XC parts including a VC unit on their way to the junkyard shortly!

Why is ANY ATF $30 per liter? Don't our cars use Dex3?

I have no problem with the age, of the ATF..... I likely have opened ATF on my shelf that I'd use that's even older.

Edit: Nope, no older ATF anymore that I could find in the garage. Just the new bottle I bought.

Yes to the old ATF question. Keep ina cool dry place with the bottles inclined at an angle of arc cos (SQRT (1/3))/ pi…..about 19 degrees per the chief theoretician of the Atomic Bomb

Thanks guys. I have arranged to go collect the oil now based on your input. I was thinking the same, storage is always the key.

Abscate were you commenting to me about the motor mount? Is it for a 98? The owner of the 98 wagon has just received her brand new shiny (sort of) Volvo OE part in a nice blue box. Now just have to find time and access to the car to replace it. Mostly the latter!

Anyway, I guess I have to go and look at the seized tailgate wiper motor on the 'R'. It just never stops.............................!

I will also check the rear washer motor as bound to have seized again as they always do with lack of use.

+1 on the ATF, all the 'experts' over at Bobs say synthetic doesn't really have shelf life issues.
I have a rear wiper motor on the shelf, let us know if it needs the Dr. Abscate Transport system engaged (he has the wheel bolts already, but a return visit is guaranteed.)

Will do foggydogg! Really appreciate the offer but it the wiper AND the washer motor are now working again. A bit of lube to the spline though the hatch glass and run off the window and then cleaned glass and wiper blade and all is good for now. It is now on the winter repair list for R&M work.

Wiper motor had fully seized and would not loosen up. Had a cheap spare and it worked fine so far!

Oil was collected today in 4 x 1 Liter and 1 x 4 liter containers. Owner admitted the oil was bought more like 5 years ago.

When I got home I wanted to check if it stated if it was synthetic oil anywhere, but could not read the small print so used my bench magnifier. Could not find anything clarifying the type of oil it was (I know it is 3309) but when I happened to tilt the plastic containers I saw something printed on the bottom edge. It was the date of manufacture. 3 of the 1 liter cans are dated 2012, 1 is 2013 and the the 4 liter was 2014! So the oil was already really old when Volvo sold him the oil!! So now hopefully it is ok. The oil level sight on the side of the container shows nice red trans oil and all are still sealed.
