'91 240 sedan trunk won't open!

Post by edphotos »

Hi --I'm a newbie here (but not to owning my Volvo). I have owned my '91 240 for the last 20 years, and this problem hasn't cropped up before: I can not release the trunk lid--forgive me if this topic has been explained before but here is my situation:

I loaded up my trunk and gently closed the lid. When attempting to open it--no go. The automatic door locks all function, the fuse is good, ---the key turns the trunk's lock cylinder --but zero. I do have access to "see" the trunk by lowering the rear seat armrest. I know some suggest removing the lock with a super-long extension with a 10mm socket---BEFORE I attempt that route---could there be something I loaded into the trunk that is somehow blocking the release mechanism? (ie--a hand dolly...lol?) My hunch is that with a pole to shift whatever is blocking or pressing against a vital cable--it might open. I don't want to call a mobile locksmith because I fear they either wont know how to open it (since the car was built before they were born) and/or they will do more damage and then charge me big $$$--I'm willing to pay someone with the expertise, but the last European independent mechanic in this town refuses to work on anything older than 1999!! ANY suggestion will be helpful!! THANK!![/b]

Perhaps when you closed the trunk, the aging lock did not fully engage. You could try giving the top of the truck above the lock a good wack with your hand. This may fully engage the latch and then you can unlock it.
If it works, then lubricate the lock mechanism.
