2012 S60 T5 Piston Install Direction

Post by KnucklesBusted »

I am rebuilding my wifes S60 T5 2.5L Turbo as it was burning a quart of oil in less than one tank of gas (!). No comments on the damage done to Volvo corp. as a result of the train wreck caused by these series of engines. 2012 B5254T5 was the first when they resumed T60 production and perhaps the worst as I believe they only used it one year.
I cannot figure out what direction to install the pistons:
From VIDA with my VIN found:

The VIDA dwg is at best ambiguous… I “think” I see the flywheel flange on the crank which would mean it is showing the back of the block, but maybe that is a H Balancer. But the water jacket more closely resembles the front, the diagram matches portions of both the front and the back!

My piston, faint arrow points to the right, PN reads right side up if you view from the right in this photo, wear spot on the skirt Teflon coating is on the valve relief side:

Assumptions:
1. The valve pockets s/b for the intake (larger) valves. This would mean arrow points towards front of engine.
2. Scuff mark on skirt s/b on the exhaust (thrust) side of the block for this clockwise spinning engine. Arrow to the back for that to happen, and valve reliefs would be on the exhaust side.
3. Volvo issued a TSB for ring replacement that clearly states piston arrow to the front, but the TSB starts in 2013 and does not appear to include my engine

I am going to install the pistons arrow front as in my opinion the valve relief pockets trump all other considerations, and in every case I can recall any arrow points either front or exhaust. Do not want them to hit is most important.

Comments would be most WELCOME!

Thank you.
