850 power steering fluid drain and fills.

Post by rguzz »

To my surprise my power steering fluid was dirty, smelled burnt, and had metal fragments in it. It was last flushed when rack and pinion was replaced, about 5 years ago. Pump has always been a bit noisy but most people haven't noticed or commented. I did a litre of drain and fills with Redline 75w only because I had it on the shelf, according to it's specs it's compatible. Anyway, I generally don't think of PS fluid as something that needs regular service but maybe now I will keep a closer eye on it. Volvo manual says IIRC no servicing required!

Have always done the turkey baster technique on the PS fluid until she looks good. Any fluid will need to get replaced in my view.

The flush procedure by MadeInJapan works very well. It's a very controlled process because the fluid only circulates when the wheel is being turned. I think I ran two liters through the system before the exiting fluid was nice and red.

My 2 cents on PS system: Clean fluid is a must, and I've also had a Magnefine inline filter on the return hose for over ten years. 333K on original rack so far. Seems to work really well. Any hydraulic system should have a filter in my opinion. Otherwise it's just an exponentially aggravating cycle of wear. I have one on the trans return line as well.

Refresh my memory on details, install, etc. Where did you put it, inline PS pump and transmission? Thanks.
