Clicking noise coming from engine (2002 v70)

Post by 02V70 »

After I put the engine back together after replacing the head gasket, and after a few weeks, I started hearing a ticking noise coming from somewhere. I have attached a video file with the noise. The noise only happens on idle, and goes away when driving or reving. I think it happened because I put something together wrong. It sounds like it may be coming from where all the pullys and belts are.

i'd pull the timing belt cover and watch the belt at idle.

I pulled the cover and didn’t see anything different happening when there was a clicking noise. However, I did notice it only happens when the A/C is on. I can’t really tell where the noise is coming from, but it doesn’t sound like it’s coming from the compressor. I attached a video showing the noise coming and going with the a/c compressor.

To me it is a viberating sound from plastic material -- loose belt cover housing, not properly fastened. A careful look at the edges of the belt may not be a clue, but the belt tensioner may provide a clue.

does the aC blow cold air, sounds like the clutch isn't fully engaging

The A/C seems to work intermittently.

You might want to have a look at the compressor cycling. I personally ended up having a weak clutch and had to do the “bread clip” trick (though I used cable ties instead) to get it cycling properly.

Get a strong light and watch the AC clutch, its probably not locking , just clicking.
